Best. Christmas. Album. Ever.
Beautiful, but without the syrupy sentimentality of typical Christmas albums. Simple, textured, warm and wonderful.
It'll melt the Bah Humbug right out of you
Christmas Carols are a difficult repertoire that has been tried in almost every genre: traditional, country, rock, jazz, pop, blues, R&B or fusion of genres: pop/R&B, jazz/rock. There are examples of success in all styles but the difficulty of pulling it off increases as the target style becomes very different from the original traditional performance. Christmas Carols are inherently traditional, some dating back hundreds of years, and their spiritual potency can be diluted by the addition of a back beat. The essential quality needed in the performance of christmas music, in any style, is intimacy. This is music that you are inviting to become part of a very special celebration and it shouldn't overwhelm the assembly with musical excess.
Michelle Beauchesne's Cello Christmas is a wonderful collection of traditional Christmas music performed with skill, spirit and restraint. The intermingling of the different cello voices could be coming from the next room. Her performance of these familiar melodies will warm the most cynical heart. On a personal note, all of the carols in this collection have been performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale, an a cappella operatic choir, which was the music played during the celebration of Christmas in my childhood family home. The melodies as performed by Beauchesne suggest the lyrics and the meaning of each carol and attach themselves to the tradition, stimulating welcome memories.
