"A tribute album pulled off right!
Every now and again a record label and producer come together on a tribute album that seems to make sense. New Order's music certainly requires precise attention paid to ensuring that when reproduced it maintains the same high quality that the original band was known for. Fortunately for us music fans, the tribute album Ceremony: A New Order Tribute is really well produced and the bands selected for this tribute album pay the band the homage deserved.
One of the real treats of this tribute album is Sunbears! take on Thieves Like Us. With a great musical component to the track matched to vocals that are performed to the highest caliber, Sunbears! made paying tribute to New Order their only goal on this track. The performance on this track is astounding and the emphasis that was paid on making the track a musically complete piece of work is clearly evident. When the vocals fade out there is a dynamic electric component to the instrumentation that leaves the listener simply wrapped around the music that is being performed.
Coming up with a tribute album is a risky endeavor and there is a certain fine line that needs to be toed between paying homage and sounding silly. On the track Ceremony performed by Yes But No (Kites with Lights Remix) there is a musical genuflection toward New Order offered on the album. New Order forever changed the music scene thanks to their ability to infuse electronic, rock, punk and so much more into their music and perhaps is it nowhere more evident the influence that they had than on this track performed by Yes But No. There is a foot-tapping beauty to this track that almost forces the listener right out of their chair and onto the dance floor thanks to the exceptional melding of sounds together to make one cohesive sound on this track. The danceable nature that Yes But No was able to emulate on this rendition is in the true New Order style and the song is exceptionally well done. Placing this track as the very last song on the tribute album leaves no doubt that this tribute album was done right."
-Bounty628 (Epinions)
The double CD set is stunning, if only for the sheer variety of music styles that have been grafted onto the New Order tracks and the fact that most of them stand up as versions in their own right, rather than cheap copies of the originals. It shows the strength of the songs which allow themselves to be smacked around via electro, rock, acoustic, indie, dance and grunge, without being murdered in the process.
-The Salford Star
Standouts include Yes But No (consisting of 10-and-13-year old sisters Brianna and Skylar Ward) and their splendid and faithful version of the resonant "Ceremony", The Dark Romantics' U2-like "Crystal", Christian Webb & Adam Knowles' lovely "Run" (what an amazing song), The Sheaks' dusky Western-shoegaze take on "Ceremony" (Can you tell this is one of my favorite New Order songs?). Other notables include Light Yourself On Fire, who shockingly convert "Chosen Time" into a growly metal monster, Xoxo's solemn "Every Little Counts", and Win Win Winter's plaintive piano-driven "Regret". And that's not to mention a spoken intro from Peter Hook (of New Order) himself. So, you have some radical reinterpretations, plenty of (true?) faithful covers, and plenty of reverential and respectful tributes. A superb set for any New Order fan, and plenty of solid material for novices just as well.

For this disc, some of the best of the new movement of post-New Order bands have been assembled to lend their touch to the band’s vast catalog. Kites with Lights with a blistering version of “Dream Attack.” Rabbit in the Moon take on an indy rock blitz through “Blue Monday.” Ripple favorites, Kingsbury, make an appearance with their take on “This Time of the Night.” Detachments tackle “The Perfect Kiss,” while The Dark Esquire lend their sound to “Temptation.” There’s even a moving version of “Ceremony,” performed by Yes But No, two sisters aged 10 and 13, who benefited from Wilson’s legacy.
-The Ripple Effect
Mediocre
Detachments got the best of the covers.
