iTunes Review

Along with Marisa Monte and Seu Jorge, the young Sao Paulo songstress Céu is at the forefront of the popular revival of the sounds of early seventies Brazil. Like her contemporaries she draws upon the influence of musical giants like Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso, but blends these influences with a decidedly contemporary approach to rhythm and production, adding electronic flourishes to lilting sambas and delirious layers of overdubs to simple folk melodies. Though Céu’s album might be classified as worldbeat thanks to the presence of turntablist DJ Marco, and the warm Portishead-like production of Beto Villares, the sounds here are largely organic, and the adventurous fusion of styles on Céu never sounds forced or insincere. Instead, Céu proves herself to be a stunningly original songwriter, juxtaposing the soulful horns of “Rainha” against an infectious Bossa strum and layers of angelic vocalizations. Though Céu stumbles somewhat on her beautifully delivered, but somewhat too straightforward, cover of Bob Marley’s “Concrete Jungle”, she has managed to deliver an engaging and stylistically diverse debut that ranks among 2007’s best Brazilian releases.

Sayoo, haha, I don't think so

Ok, I do love this album, great vocals, great layered textures, but from the clips, you can figure that out for yourself. What I would like to correct is the notion that her name is said sayoo. That would be seio in portuguese, which means breast. Her name means sky and is said with the e in pet, seh-oo. I don't know why the British site about her misinformed you all that it's sayoo, but as she's Brazilian, and é is always eh as in pet in portuguese, ay is not a possibility for her very Portuguese language name.

Simply Gorgeous

I just bought this album this morning on a whim, put it on my iPod, hit shuffle songs, and within three songs her voice was haunting me. I immedately stopped the iPod and pulled up the entire album and played it start to finish. WOW. What an amazing vocalist. What a melodic voice. This will be the perfect album to play during dinner parties as background music or while unwinding from a day with a great caipirinha out by the pool. AMAZAING album and for $10, you cannot beat it.

Beautiful Brazilian Malemolencia feel to this album

Céu (pronounced Sayou) is not only beautiful and earthy, she has an awesome voice. This album reminds me of groups like "Chambao", "Brazilian Girls" and "Ojos de Brujo". They are a fusion of old tradition with the fresh breath of new life. Céu is definetly a great album for sitting back and relaxing, for winding down in your car on your way home from work, and the perfect music for a chill session (party) with friends.

Biography

Born: 1980 in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Genre: Brazilian

Years Active: '00s

Céu proved to one of the more internationally appealing singers to break out of Brazil around the time of her 2005 debut, ultimately winning a Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and garnering interest for herself in Europe and North America. Her singing is what earned her acclaim, yet her music is novel as well, a fusion of samba, reggae, and electronica, with touches of jazz and soul. She was born Maria do Céu Whitaker Poças in São Paulo; however, she bills herself as simply Céu. (In Portuguese,...
