Album Review

The reformed Pylon acquit themselves nicely on Chain, but never deliver a knockout blow. Stylistically speaking, there are no big changes here, but the exuberance and emotion carry even the most rote workouts.

Astonished to hear this one

It's pushing 20 years, but Look Alive is still a timeless song that had its 15 minutes of fame, but really should have catapulted this band to higher horizons. Minimilist production yet catchy songs ---I can't believe this is on iTunes!

Solidly Original: file under classic Athens GA sound

A tighter and crisper sound than their first two records, "Chain" is the record of a vitally important band that reunited at the urging of friends no less than R.E.M., among others. They are the prototype of much of college radio, circa early 1980s, and though this record was initially valued less by fans of their first two records, "Gyrate" and "Chomp," it is a recording that has held up well on its own in the 17 years since it was made. Everyone should own this CD, especially those who understand the importance of Athens GA to the sound of modern pop music. Finally, they could not be nicer people--after seeing them at the Cat's Cradle in Chaple Hill NC around 1988, my friends and I ran backstage to tell them how much we loved them, and they were both thankful and generous in return, giving us signed photos which they then proceeded to draw all over to make them unique for us. They are currently back together and touring (I'll see them in Nov.) and their first record will be re-released in Oct. 2007--buy it the second you see it.

Fantastic Album

All I can say is that Pylon is one of my favorite bands ever! I saw them open for REM on the Green Tour and the very next day I had Pylon Hits and Chain. Each member brings something unique that seems to swirl together in this sea of sound. The guitar is angular, the bass is almost melody, the vocals are at times harsh and other times soft, and the drums pull it all togehter. My favorite is This-That and Look Alive (but I think that all the songs here are pretty good).

Biography

Formed: 1978 in Athens, GA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Despite failing to equal the commercial success or cross-cultural impact of their Athens, GA, compatriots R.E.M. and the B-52's, Pylon's influence on the city's legendary music scene proved just as pronounced — the group's propulsive, angular jangle pop sound resonated not only through the Athens creative community but throughout the American pop underground of the 1980s, and though more heard-of than actually heard, their role as elder statesmen of the alternative rock explosion is unassailable....
