iTunes Review
As a long-time independent artist, Rachael Sage has followed her own distinctive muse. Her output over the past decade has shown her debts to musical theater, as well as her affinity for the post-feminist pop of Tori Amos and Ani DiFranco. At her best, Sage is a witty lyricist and adept composer, tossing off provocative lines set to Off-Broadway-style melodies. She hones in on relationships with an acute touch, savoring juicy details (e.g., “I met him on a Saturday at a funeral buffet”) in songs like “Invincible,” “Vertigo,” and “Hunger In John.” Her fluency as a pianist helps tunes like “Site-Seeing” and “My Word” take flight. Occasionally, Sage seems a bit stiff as a vocalist, unable for instance to find an easy groove on the R&B-inflected “Angel In My View.” But tracks like the heartfelt and revelatory title song make you forgive her weak spots and whether she stumbles or ascends, Sage speaks with her own voice, as Chandelier makes clear.
Customer Reviews
Wow! Rachael's best album yet!!
I just got this album and listened to it several times in a row. I love all of Rachael's stuff but this is like her album she could've called "Rachael Sage" and left it at that, like a major label artist coming into her/his own. Why she isn't huge and all over the radio blows my mind. If you like female singer-songwriters or just love a great song with a catchy melody, there are over a dozen songs here for you. Her voice is stronger than ever and it really sounds like she's hit her stride. My favorite song by far is the title track, Chandelier, but I love them all!! I wish someone would put one of her songs in some big movie, then she'd probably be instantly huge like Ingrid Michaelson. Sometimes art isn't fair. Go get this record, you won't regret it!
Organically beautiful~
Amazing, brilliant, inspired & inspiring... Rachael has created another incredible album. Lyrically and musically, she brings such intense light and beauty. I've been waiting for over a year to have "Moonlight & Fireflies" on a cd; and simply said, she sounds great on cd, but the live experience is impossible to describe in the most wonderful of ways.
Dynamic Artistic Alt-Pop
Hovering in the sphere of Feist, Regina Spektor, and Sara Bareilles, Rachael Sage continues to create brilliant albums that speak to the soul. This 13-track collection is full of lush piano arrangements, accompanied by a wide array of instruments that accentuate her haunting voice and poignant songwriting. Often steeped in metaphor, universal themes unfold within the saccharine yet mercurial feel of the album. Chandelier opens with the dark, frenetic "Vertigo" - an ode to self-discovery within an adulterous relationship. Another noteworthy track, "Angel In My View", is a catchy, up-beat love letter to a friend with playful trumpet flourishes that highlight the poppy yet euphonious melody. Overall, Chandelier is an excellent representation of her now eight-album-deep catalog.
