An organist worthy of his instrument
Olivier Latry's recording of these Widor symphonies is, as far as I am concerned, the greatest rendition of these works available on record. Of particular notability are the opening Allegro of the 6th Symphony and the famous closing Toccata of the 5th Symphony, both of which amply demonstrate M. Latry's absolute mastery of the instrument and its repertoire. This album was recorded on the great Cliquot/Cavaille-Coll organ at Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, a favorite of its builder and one of the mightiest instruments in the world for over a century. Widor was to the organ what Liszt was to the piano, and certainly there could not be a better instrument to convey the passionate showmanship contained in these scores. And it is doubtful that there is a better organist to play this instrument. Latry consistently combines deep musicality with what may be the best technique in Europe, and the result is a truly superior recording. Highly recommended.
Sixieme Symphonie: I Allegro
this man is the Michael Jordan of musicians today...there is none better than Olivier
Latry at his Best
Ther is not a piece on this album which is not magnificent. The "Fugue Sur Le Carillon de La Catthedrale de Soissons" alone is worth the album price, particularly if you have seen and heard this Cathedrale and Carillon in France.
