iTunes Review

As the lead singer of Hootie & The Blowfish, Darius Rucker always had a voice that screamed “crossover.” Its gentle, straightforward warmth meant he could easily tackle smooth R&B, middle-of-the-road pop and country music without difficulty. Sure enough, Rucker transformed himself into a contemporary country singer in 2008 with Learn To Live, and 2010’s Charleston, SC 1966 continues the streak. Brad Paisley joins Rucker for “I Don’t Care,” a strikingly good piece of modern country music. “Southern State of Mind” goes down smooth. “Things I’d Never Do” adds that country twist where he recounts all the things he’s done. “Whiskey and You” is about as dirty as he gets, while “She’s Beautiful” is a pure expression of cupid’s arrow hitting its target. “Might Get Lucky” could fit easily on a Tim McGraw album. “This” was co-written with former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi. The album has a flawless, Adult Contemporary country sound that flows without force. It’s exactly what Rucker should be doing.

As the frontman of Hootie & the Blowfish, Darius Rucker was one of the most popular frontmen in mainstream pop/rock during the mid-'90s. The band's debut album, Cracked Rear View, was virtually inescapable in 1995, eventually selling more than 16 million copies and becoming one of the most successful albums of all time.
