Album Review

From the demure photos gracing the artwork (the tight shorts of Rainbow are long gone) and the first single/opening track "Through the Rain," a slow ballad designed as "Vision of Love" meets "Hero," it's evident that Mariah is back in the adult contemporary camp. She hasn't completely abandoned hip-hop — Jay-Z and Freeway guest on "You Got Me," there's a the club-ready groove for "You Had Your Chance" (built on the same bassline as "Nuthin' But a G Thang"), and a take-off of Cam'ron's "Oh Boy" on "Boy (I Need You)" (which he endorses with a cameo); there's the crackling vinyl used as ambient noise on "Irresistible," and the use of dripping water as percussion on "I Only Wanted." She also covers Def Leppard's power ballad classic "Bringin' on the Heartbreak."

The beginning of the end..

This was Mariah's first truly "meh" album, featuring very little memorable tracks and of course ya just gotta throw in the annoying rapper guest stars in songs to appeal to the younger generation.. That right there automatically knocks it down by a star. The other star missing is simply because despite Mariah actually singing here, not whining like in recent works, there still just isn't a thing here worthy of maybe two or three listens and that's it. This isn't like the old Mariah where you could listen all day long and never tire of it. I suggest you pass this up and get just about anything that came before it.

Subtle Invitation

This album at first throws you off , because you are expecting to here the Mariah we all know and love, but if you take a deeper listen to the album you are immediately drawn into the more sultry side. This album is full of stand out tracks.

My faves

SUBTLE INVITATION- The most vulneerable Mariah since the ROOF. Organic, bluesy masterpiece. Not overly produced , and the lyrics speak to your heart. Amazing

LULLABY- Slow tempo heaven, she references several songs with the lyrics of this song. brilliant

Great album but wish Mariah would get away from the rappers

There is no reason I can think of that this album was not a #1 album. Amazing music. Amazing vocals.
Mariah could have left Irresistible off the album as it is horrible but other than that, it is a great album. Her cover of Bringin On the Heatbreak is AMAZING. Possibly one of her best songs. Lullaby is one of my favorite Mariah songs to date. This album was clearly over looked. Any person who appreciates good music would like and appreciate this great album. I just wish Mariah would relax with the rappers. She tries a bit too hard at times to be "street" and it is not flattering to anyone...especially a talent like that. She really sells herself short when trying to go ghetto.

Hopefully Mariah will make another album like Daydream and keep the rappers for the remix version.

The best-selling female performer of the 1990s, Mariah Carey rose to superstardom on the strength of her stunning five-octave voice; an elastic talent who moved easily from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop, she earned frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, but did...
