Album Review

Like any Billy Idol album, Charmed Life is wildly inconsistent, but it has enough strong songs — like the gloriously tongue-in-cheek hard rock of "Cradle of Love" — to make most of the filler on the record forgivable.

If you're not ready to drop $9.99 on CHARMED LIFE, at least do yourself a favor and pick up a few of this records must have tunes. "Prodigal Blues" is phenominal, revealing and fantastically vulnerable, as is "Trouble with The Sweet Stuff" and "Endless Sleep". "The Loveless" and "Pumping on Steel" are two more keepers. CHARMED LIFE is Idol's first Solo Record without guitar monster Steve Stevens, but Mark Younger Smith adds a bit of Texas Blues to an already secure Idol Sound. "Cradle of Love" is another chart climber that belongs in your collection. This record branches out a bit from the Idol that graced the previous records Rebel Yell, Whiplash Smile, and Billy Idol, and it offers yet another side to the Blond Snearing Rock Star. The only true downside is the replaced "Mojo Rising" part of LA Woman, which can be cured if you purchase the single edit of that song. Beyond that, even the Bond written "License to Thrill" kicks and pumps and gets the blood flowing. If you don't pick up the whole record, at least grab the songs listed above and add them to your music collection.

Where's The Video?

Cradle of Love is a good song that makes this album, but the video is what is really needed...one of the best ever!

I too owned Charmed Life on Casette and still listen to it. There are some great songs on here and I too think Prodigal Blues is a classic. I still remember watching the video for Cradle of Love on MTV--when they played videos--it was one of the great ones. This is a good purchase, beacuse while a lot of these songs were not big radio hits, they are ones that you will probably listen to over and over. Good stuff.
