Album Review

On Chase the Clouds Away, Chuck Mangione began to move toward the pop-oriented style that would provide the foundation for his breakthrough in 1977 with Feels So Good. Although he had demonstrated slight pop leanings on his earlier records, they were primarily in a straight jazz vein. Here, he surrendered to the warm, rich sounds of his flugelhorn and made a smooth collection of sweet pop melodies. As far as jazz content goes, there isn't much here, and there's only a handful of songs that come close to matching the effortless grace of the title track, but the whole of Chase the Clouds Away is enjoyably pleasant background music.

Bad reviewer

Man, what idiot reviewed this album and all the other Mangione albums on I-tunes. This is not pop music! Nor is it background music. All the tracks, save for the last two are serious tunes with serious jazz improvisation. How you can listen to the first four tracks on this album and call it pop background music is beyond me. There are some dumb people in this world.

A Profound Album

Around 1975/1976 a guy down the street gave me a bunch of cassettes he accidentally received as part of the Columbia record club. Among them were Chase The Clouds Away and Bellavia. At the time I was a teenaged guitarist influenced by heavy metal. I couldn't stop listening. Like all good music, it transported me to another place/time. Great music...

It's good.

This is my first actual album from Chuck Mangione and it was good. I like the variety in the tracks, and how the album got into three different genres of music. My personal favorite was Soft, which was very uncharacteristic of Mangione. I never thought I'd hear anything like it from him. I also enjoyed Chase the Clouds Away which made it onto his Greatest Hits compilation. The rest was good, but those were the two that really stood out for me.

Throughout the 1970s, Chuck Mangione was a celebrity. His purposely lightweight music was melodic pop that was upbeat, optimistic, and sometimes uplifting. Mangione's records were big sellers yet few of his fans from the era knew that his original goal was to be a bebopper. His father had often taken Chuck and his older brother Gap (a keyboardist) out to see jazz concerts, and Dizzy Gillespie was a family friend. While Chuck studied at the Eastman School, the two Mangiones co-led a bop quintet called...
