Different but great

First off, some haters calling this song "weird" or "plain out retarded" should just stay out of here and continue listening to Ke$ha, Beiber and all that other commercial garbage that gets played on the radio. It takes a certain level of intelligence to understand this type of music that most top-40 listeners do not have.

Now this song is very different from what Portishead did in Dummy way back in the day. This song continues the path that Third took a couple of years ago that alienated many fans and pleased others. I for one was very pleased with the direction Portishead took with Third which differed greatly from their trip-hop origins but continued to push the boundaries of music. 'Chase the Tear' is a very good follow-up to Third and once you listen to it, not too distant from their early work. Beth Gibbon's vocals continue to haunt while Geoff Barrow's beat keeps things simple. Not trip-hop anymore but something maybe better.

yes please

I have to say that Dummy pretty much changed my life. I thought and think that it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard - BUT, when 3 came out I almost forgot about Dummy. I couldn't imagine how they could top what they'd done, but in my opinion they blew it out of the water. I love how they have developed over time. This song is no exception. Love it love it love it. Portishead, thank you for continuing to rip the envelope to shreds.

Is there anything more awesome

than a person who can't even spell the word "retarded" using the word to describe something other than himself?

Portishead may not have invented trip-hop, but they were among the first to popularize it, particularly in America. Taking their cue from the slow, elastic beats that dominated Massive Attack's Blue Lines and adding elements of cool jazz, acid house, and soundtrack music, Portishead created an atmospheric, alluringly dark sound. The group wasn't as avant-garde as Tricky, nor as tied to dance traditions as Massive Attack; instead, it wrote evocative pseudo-cabaret pop songs that subverted their conventional...
