I was so excited to have a new AIC album to listen to. Took a couple of listens and now this is without a doubt my favorite AIC album. Buy this album if for no other reason than the track "Black Gives Way to Blue". The emotion in the lyrics along with the haunting melody is a perfect but heart wrenching goodbye to Layne RIP.........

An impressive return to prominence...

I was pleasantly surprised to hear the cool, detached, heavy AIC vibe that I remember from the 90’s still intact with this incarnation of the band. While no longer rooted in grunge, the band can still weave clever melodies together with unique chord voicings and vocal harmonies in a way that used to catch my ear during the Layne Staley era. Highlights include the atmospheric opener “All Secrets Known”, the acoustic gem “Your Decision”, and the sorrowful “Private Hell”.

My only gripe with this record is DuVall’s placement in the mix. I would have liked to hear more of him, especially in those two-part harmonies that are quintessentially AIC. I assume Cantrell’s vocals were intentionally placed higher in the mix for familiarities’ sake, I hope that this is corrected on the next record. Cantrell has a nice voice, but he’s not a lead singer for a top-shelf band like AIC.

All told, this is intelligent, melodic, heavy rock ‘n roll for the metal fan with soul and an ear for crunchy riffs and soulful lyrics. While not a perfect record, "Black Gives Way to Blue" is very good and worth repeated listenings. If this music is a sign of things to come for the band, AIC might have yet another 5-star record in their future.

As much as I have missed Layne and watched Jerry try to make a go of it. I was waiting immeasureably for this cd to drop. I have been impressed with it all. New singer sounds like Layne at times, but also has his own style. Black Gives Way to Blue is the best tribute song to Layne. The first time I listened to it and paid attention to the lyrics, I about teared up. Brought back a lot of flashback memories of the old AIC and obviously of Layne. This song totally accounts for Layne's passing and the lyrics pretty much tell it all. This will be the song played when I take my dirt nap. Beautiful tune which I predict will be a huge hit once it starts hitting the radio stations. Keep on Rockin's Boys, can't wait for the next one.

Biography

Formed: 1987 in Seattle, WA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

In many ways, Alice in Chains was the definitive heavy metal band of the early '90s. Drawing equally from the heavy riffing of post-Van Halen metal and the gloomy strains of post-punk, the band developed a bleak, nihilistic sound that balanced grinding hard rock with subtly textured acoustic numbers....
