A Classic Sleeper From Beginning To End

In these times of slickly produced, overly processed, sterile sounding, digital recordings; this Beasties date has the most organic, fattest, analog sounding music I've heard in years. They're not merely just rap maestros but are surprisingly good at playing their instruments. Who would have known? And let's not forget the other Beastie, Money Mark, who's tasteful playing and old-school, analog, keyboard sounds put this disc over the top. The tunes are well crafted, have lots of changes, dynamics, textures, tones and with a wonderfully raw energy that is lacking in this - or any other genre - nowadays. And don't worry about the good musicianship ruining all the silly fun of their raps or crazy samples because that's all here too. I bought this disc when it first came out back in 92' and found that it got better the more I listened to it; the sign of a great recording. This is the disc that was always playing when my little brother and I were growing up together. To this day, whenever the situation calls for it, we still quote from it... along with our favorite stories from Lloyd Llewellyn and early Eightball comics. Anyway, I don't recommend cherry-picking the tunes here. You not only get 20 tracks for a paltry $7.99 but they're in sequential order for a reason; any song that's gets left out will detract from the full experience. The ones you don't think you like now, initially, will eventually become one's you like later on... and that's a sure bet. Enjoy.

RIP MCA

I remember my oldest brother and I jamming out License to Ill back in '86/'87 and I was hooked. Then came Paul's Boutique and I was blown away with how original it was. And then there was this album. So What'cha Want and Pass the Mic are still mainstays in my playlists and when my kid first heard these songs it was like me hearing them for the first time all over again. This album is just a timeless classic and their music will never die. God bless Adam "MCA" Yauch, our generation has lost 1/3 of a musical prodigy.

REVOLUTIONARY!!!

This was a revolutionary and game-changing album in the world of Hip-Hop and music in general ! Mike D, Adrock, and MCA played their own instruments instead of just relying on samples and loops, and reminds me of my favorite era in Rap and Hip-hop...buy it!!! It was an instant classic when it came out and remains one of my personal favorites! MCA, you will be missed R.I.P.

Biography

Formed: 1979 in New York, NY

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

As the first white rap group of any importance, the Beastie Boys received the scorn of critics and strident hip-hop musicians, both of whom accused them of cultural pirating, especially since they began as a hardcore punk group in 1981. But the Beasties weren't pirating — instead, they treated rap as part of a post-punk musical underground, where the D.I.Y. aesthetics of hip-hop and punk weren't that far apart. Of course, the exaggerated b-boy and frat-boy parodies of their unexpected hit debut...
