Good, solid performance by Perahia

In my opinion, Murray Perahia is one of the better Chopin pianists currently alive. This album is a solid collection of exactly what the title says... Ballads, Maurkas, Etudes and Waltzes. This album gives you a few samples of each kind, but the choices are excellent (and for the most part, these are tunes that die-hard Chopin followers are likely familiar with already). For example, of the two waltzes included, Perahia plays one of Chopin's most beloved "fun waltzes".... the everlasting hit Grande Valse Brillante in E flat major. The other pieces are equally well-chosen. There is only one reason why I reviewed this as 4 out of 5 stars. I'm not sure if the fault is with Perahia or the fault is with the recording studio: a few pieces seem to be played too "soft". For example, the aforementioned Grande Valse Brillante, when played by just about ANY OTHER PIANIST, it is typically played a bit louder, livelier, and more energetically than Perahia plays it here. Where Perahia fails here (or perhaps it is the fault of the recording studio) is that some of his pieces seem too soft, too hush-hush when they should not be. In order to appreciate it from this album, I had to crank up the volume all the way up! Grande Valse Brilliante, after all, is supposed to be a grand song, a lively happy tune, to be played in "Vivo". It is a grand waltz, a dance tempo. Maybe Perahia is one of those "softies", the type of Chopin pianists that prefer to be soft and delicate on the keyboard rather than be a pompous showman that bangs on the keys incessantly. That's a fine excuse, assuming that he is playing a nocturne, or any Chopin song that is meant to be played delicately and softly. Still, the album is well worth the money for any Chopin enthusiast.

one of my favorite CDs

I'm not much given to idolatrous worship, but Perahia is one of those artists who I have the highest esteem for. His Mozart concerti are right at the top of my list of favorite listening, and this disc of Chopin miscellany is also quite wonderful. This was the first disc Perahia made back in 1994 after fully recovering from a debilitating hand injury that left him lame for two years. It won a Gramophone Award, with that publication stating, "The greatest, certainly the richest, of Perahia's many exemplary recordings."
