Album Review

Since emerging in the early '90s with "Get Here," the incredibly rangy R&B vocalist Oleta Adams has found a mixed bag of success in slick R&B and gospel music — but her church background made the latter a more honest spiritual fit. Her re-emergence after a five-year hiatus is a triumphant one, as she mines familiar material with that distinctive, emotionally powerful voice that's been off the scene way too long. The first two gospel-oriented numbers ("Of the Father's Love Begotten," featuring much of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," and "Alleluia, Alleluia (Peace on Earth)") pit that voice over a swelling, sweeping choir, creating a fresh magic that makes Christmas Time with Oleta one of the best vocal holiday offerings of 2006. But those are just the beginning of the blessings that flow. She practices restraint on the soft and jazzy "Christmastime Is Here" (in a version which would make her contemporary, Patti Austin, proud) and takes whimsical turns on the percussive "I Wonder as I Wander" and a soul-jazz rendition of "Winter Wonderland" (featuring the singer herself on acoustic piano). Adams draws out the drama of Amy Grant's spiritual epic "Breath of Heaven" and gets cozy with a big-band-flavored arrangement on "Let It Snow." And what would a true gospel-driven Christmas disc be without "Silent Night"? Adams' takes a subtle approach, with sparse synth backing, tapping into the solemnity of an overly commercialized holiday rather than overwhelming us with bombast — the perfect, peace-minded approach, and a true religious experience as well.

a beautiful person with a beautiful voice

I met Oleta Adams at two of the four concerts in which I saw/heard her perform and she was (each time) as generous and lovely as her singing. The first time I ever saw her perform (Lincon theatre, Washington DC) she told the audience that she is choosy about what she sings because her voice is a gift from God and she wants to use her gift wisely and in honor of Him. I never forgot what a beautiful thought that was and how impressed with her that she had the courage to say it. She hooked me on "get here" and kept me as a fan with every song she sung after that. This album is no exception BUY IT--you wont regret it. Way to go Oleta--congratulations on another great album This album, like every other that she has released, is so beautiful, sincere and uniquely Oleta.

Wow - Original Christmas Music

What's not to like... Oleta Adams is one of the greatest female singers, I only wish she would record more. This CD is a must have if you are a fan of hers, and if you are a fan of good music and original Christmas music. What I love about her most is that she is not afraid to admit that she is a child of God, and acknowledge where her wonderful gift of song comes from. Oleta my sister, you've done it again! (now let's get another Gospel CD)...

Finally!

I've been patiently waiting for Oleta's next album, and what a treat! Its magnificent. She has one of the most poweful, soul inspiring voices I've ever heard.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Being the daughter of a minister, it's no surprise that Oleta Adams' roots are in gospel, as she often performed in her father's church. But her formal introduction to the masses began rather unexpectedly. While performing in a Kansas City hotel, Oleta Adams was discovered by Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears, and she was invited to participate in the recording of the British band's follow-up to the immensely popular 1985 album Songs From the Big Chair. When Tears for Fears unleashed...
