Album Review

This jazz-vocal group presents a decent yet mostly uninspiring collection of holiday classics, including "Joy to the World," "O Come All Ye Faithful," "Silent Night," "Deck the Halls," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear."

Essential Listening

The great innovation here, besides the incredible multi-tracked vocals (this was released in 1969, not 1990 as above), is the inclusion of the Alfred Burt carols. These are magnificent miniatures by a brilliant young composer, dead in 1955 at age 34, and will live long after we're all dead. Gene Puerling, of course, always the master arranger, and each cut perfectly sung.

Has the itunes reviewer been living under a rock?

This album is widely known as the superlative compilation of Christmas music of the last thirty years, if not all time. Gene Purling's arrangements transform familiar carols into melodies you'll think you've never heard, and his signature multi-tracking is used to best effect here, producing a shimmering, celestial aura around the transcendent vocals. Especially deserving of notice is singer Bonnie Herman, whose warm, direct voice is both soothing and electrifying, and exquisitely pure. Don't miss this.

obviously iTunes is not a source of artistry.

Relying on reviews from iTunes is like asking for expert advice at WalMart. iTunes is successful at loading up non-artistic musical entertainment and selling it in huge volumes. Gene Puerling is the master of choral arranging and the king of all vocal music arrangers. This album and others by the singers Unlimited is a must have for any person whose ears and soul respond to in tune choral art singing of the highest caliber.
