Album Review
Christopher Cross' debut was a huge hit and widely acclaimed, at least among industry professionals (critics didn't give it a second listen), leading to multi-platinum success and Grammys. In retrospect, it might seem like the kind of success that's disproportional to the record itself, especially to hipper-than-thou younger generations, but in truth, Christopher Cross was a hell of a record — it just was a hell of a soft rock record, something that doesn't carry a lot of weight among most audiences. That doesn't erase Cross' considerable gifts as a craftsman. Yes, he does favor sentimentality and can be very sweet on the ballads, but his melodicism is rich and construction tight, so there's a sturdy foundation for the classy professional gloss provided by his studio pros and friends, including indelible backing vocals by Michael McDonald. And while the hits like the dreamy "Sailing" and the surging "Ride Like the Wind" deserved all the attention, they're hardly the only highlights here — to borrow a sports metaphor, this has a deep bench, and there's not a weak moment here. In fact, soft rock albums hardly ever came better than this, and it remains one of the best mainstream albums of its time.
Customer Reviews
One of the best
This album by chris is one of the best albums of the late 70's or early 80's. It sparks up a sleu of memories.
Uh no Sailing is a Cross original
No hatin' here, but Christopher Cross recorded Sailing loooong before N'Sync did. Sailing was recorded in 1979,so JC,Chris and Joey were only kids, Lance was just born that year, and Justin wouldn't have existed for another two years. So no Cross did not steal that from N'Sync, N'Sync just redid it. Sailing is a CLASSIC.
True Musicianship
Before MTV came along with the prerequisite of an artist needing to be physically attractive and/or having visual gimmicks to sell records, we had a music industry where true musical talent took a front seat to being photogenic, looking good in tight fitting outfits and being perfectly coiffed. This album's content crossed over 3 genres: Pop, Rock, and Adult Contemporary. It had a little something for every radio station that played these formats. Partly because of the overexposure of this album, negative music critics, and the Video Age, Cross's career faltered and he was never again quite able to live up to the high expectations that this album achieved. He had more successes but each follow up seemed to be less successful than the release that proceeded it. As for me, this album provided a welcome respite from listening to the dying Disco Era music on the radio and the up and coming New Wave sound dominated by too many cheesey synthesizers and hypnotic, soulless, drum sounds contained in much of the music of the Eighties. I still love this album today and how all the tracks flow so beautifully throughout. This is, indeed, true musicianship at its best.
