Album Review
In June 2004, Sum 41 was in Congo filming a documentary for charity when they found themselves caught in the midst of the country's ongoing hostilities. But a UN aid worker named Chuck Pelletier was instrumental in getting the band to safety, and a grateful Sum 41 named their fourth album in his honor. As they say in their liners, "Without him, we'd be dead. Chuck rules!" The experience also seems to have mellowed the group's sarcastic streak. From its aggressive metal and hardcore overtones to lyrics that rail against societal ignorance and a world gone wrong, Chuck is a few steps ahead of the smirking, jocular anthems that populated Sum 41's previous output. This suddenly sober outlook hasn't lessened the rock power, though. "Why is there no reason we all can't change?" Deryck Whibley wonders in "No Reason," but the cut also binds the rapid-fire pace of hardcore to a great chorus hook. Lead single "We're All to Blame" lashes out at greed with some vicious metal riffing, "Bitter End" takes its cues from the double-bass kicks and furious lead solos of Anthrax, and "There's No Solution"'s layered vocals, psychological fretting, and explosive chorus shift give it a Linkin Park feel. Sum 41 also avoids employing too many "serious" add-ons, such as string sections or synthesizers. Chuck does have a few passages of acoustic guitar (most effectively on the low-key "Slipping Away"). But like Sum 41's previous efforts, it's a concise album that clocks in at just over a half-hour, with a basic understanding that fast and loud is what the band does best. But this time around, Sum 41 has made sure to set its message at the same high volume.

2004's Album of the Year.
by Sigh..............Sum 41 changed their sound for this album- from pop punk to a something that comes close to alternative metal. And it's all the better for this change. Sum 41 cut down on the filler on this one, too- only 2 songs are under 2 minutes. Standouts- We're All to Blame, the Bitter End, Pieces.
Sum 41 rocks!!
by ¡RocKEr¡This is my first review so it might not be perfect. Chuck and Does This Look Infected are my favorite albums by Sum 41. Chuck is named after a UN worker who got Sum 41 out of the Congo during the country's fighting.
Intro--By itself it is a good guitar solo and good intro, but it is only an intro. It sounds great if No reason is played right after.
No Reason--Nice riffs, and vocals. If you like hard rock this song is good for you. No Reason is one of the my favorites on the album.
We're All to Blame--Good song but it gets a little repetitive somethimes. Its hard and soft throughout the song.
Angels With Dirty Faces--This song doesn't stand out right away but it has nice riffs and vocals.
Some Say--Nice and peaceful in the beginning but it gets harder and then later it gets softer again. Overall, its a good song and it's catchy after a few listens.
Bitter End--Killer guitar solo and sweet riffs through the whole song and drum beats but vocals seem kinda lacking to me. This song reminds me of Metallica sorta.
Open Your Eyes--Another one of my favorites. Its both soft and hard with good riffs and the vocals are cool and catchy. "How does it feel to have a face like that? How does it feel to be replaced like that."
Slipping Away--Gets boring after a while and its way too soft through the song, but the vocals are pretty good.
I'm Not the One--Good song, great riffs and ok vocals. It is hard almost the whole song.
Welcome to Hell--My favorite song on the whole album. It is one of Sum 41's hardest songs one this album. Welcome to Hell has nice riffs and drumbeats but i really like the awesome bass guitar fill cause i play bass.
Pieces--Is an ok song and the lyrics are perfect. The only reason it isn't great to me is because the intruments get kinda boring in the song.
There's No Solution--Sounds kinda like somebody I have heard but i can't think of who this songs reminds me of. It is a soft/kinda hard song and the vocals are really catchy. "And there's no solution, give me truth to my condition." This is another one of my favorites.
88--Awesome song with nice riffs and drumbeats. Softer in the beginning but it gets harder later in the song. 88 has a killer guitar solo like Bitter End.
Overall, anybody who likes good hard rock/punk should buy this album now. Chuck is great.
Thanks Chuck for saving this band
by MadBird11I find it funny that everybody claims that they either stole music from someone else, or that this isn't anything like All Killer No Filler. Well, to both ends I say, SHUT UP!!! As soon as Chuck got them out of the Congo, you could tell that this album was going to be nothing like anything previous to it. I think that if you don't understand the meaning behind all of this, most notably No Reason, We're All to Blame, Some Say, Open Your Eyes, Slipping Away, and Pieces, becuase you think that they're abondoning their roots or cause you think they stole something... Then you don't deserve to be listening to this masterpiece anyway.
