Album Review

Reinventing themselves with a smoothed-out, electronic-heavy sound, Dredg team up with producer Dan the Automator for their fifth album, Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy. Following the trend from some of their earlier albums, Dredg continue to rework their sound, relying less on live instrumentation to go for a more production-focused sound. While this collaboration certainly ups the slickness of their sound, it doesn’t feel like it plays to the strong suits of either Dredg or Dan the Automator, moving the band far enough away from its old sound to make things feel different, but not quite far enough to let the producer really explore and push the sound into new territories. Despite this, Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy does find the band continuing to evolve quite a bit given the short break between albums, giving Dredg fans something to sink their teeth into without the customary three- to four-year gaps that they’ve become accustomed to.

Dammit dredg!!

Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy is, in my opinion, really, really bad.

I have been a fan of theirs since 2003, and they have had a TREMENDOUS impact on me personally and as a musician. Most of all, they've supplied me with of so many countless hours of walking/driving around to beautiful soundtracks. I remember 5 or 6 years ago when Catch Without Arms came out this time of year...oh man, it was paradise digging into that album, and its songs remain irremovably intertwined with the feel and memories of May through Summertime.

To call Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy a far cry from those days would be a fantastic understatement. This album should be called Gavin's 4:30 AM Weed Jams On Garage Band. These songs are completely lacking in the creativity and spark that dredg is known for. "The Thought Of Losing You"...I cannot imagine a more bland and insincere single. Honestly, dredg sound like they're just phoning it in at this point, and giving that (I think) they have wives and children of their own now, I understand; music has to take a backseat to those responsibilities.

I've been hearing a lot of fans talk about "experimentation" and "evolution." "Devolution" I could understand, but musical maturity or progress?...Frankly I think there are a lot of fans like me out there that just want to keep supporting dredg since they've been such a big musical force in their lives, and I understand that-- I did that with a lot of albums when I was younger. But to anyone who claims "The Thought Of Losing You" is the "best thing" dredg has done, do yourself a favor: Imagine that this album still existed, but dredg had not created it. Imagine it was that guy in your dorm down the hall from you. Imagine he put these songs up on his Soundcloud page or burned you a copy. Would you be fawning over this person, racking up dozens and dozens of plays on your ipod, spreading it to friends, and proclaiming him as "the next big thing" in alternative/experimental music?

I still love the guys in dredg though, and would love to hang out with them sometime, even though they would probably hate me for this review.

Dredg is still my favorite...

Bands grow and people change. People need to realize there not going to release the same albums over and over again. They will always be my favorite band. His voice alone is enough for me to give it five stars. Dredg will be around for a long time regardless if everyone excepts there music. They make music to touch people and that is exactly what they have done for alot of people. So just sit back and enjoy. Were pretty lucky to have this band in our lifetime.

Huge letdown, nowhere near their potential

First off, let me preface this review by stating that I absolutely love Dredg. El Cielo is one of the best albums I have ever purchased. Heck, I even slowly grew to liking Catch without Arms.

However, this latest release is just a huge let down. I completely understand that bands evolve and their sound changes. What I cannot understand is how a group as talented and deep as Dredg can regress and create music that lacks soul and depth. As corny as it may sound, prior Dredg albums "spoke" to me or at least made me feel some sort of emotion. I completely lack that connection with this album. Half of the songs on here have the same amount of force behind them as elevator music. While there are a couple of bright spots on the record, overall, I am utterly disappointed.

I'm all for a band changing up their style and releasing something different, but not at the cost of what made that band special in the past. Chuckles and Mr Squeezy is a huge let down for this Dredg fan, and I hope they can survive it and release something that accurately portrays their skill level in the near future. Dredg is still a fantastic band with incredible talent, but they came up far short with this offering.

Formed: 1993 in Santa Cruz, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Hailing from Los Gatos, CA, Dredg began sharpening their aggro-metal sound in the early '90s. Comprised of Gavin Hayes (vocals/guitar), Mark Engles (guitar), Drew Roulette (bass), and Dino Campanella (drums), the group was performing in area clubs before they'd even graduated from high school. Dredg self-released the Orph EP in 1997. The ambitious Leitmotif followed two years late, and it was reissued with the band's 2001 signing to Interscope. El Cielo, Dredg's proper Interscope debut, arrived in...
