"Churchill is a fiddle away from starting an indie-folk revolution."
Not even close to what comes to mind when you first hear the name of that mid-twentieth century dignitary from across the pond, Churchill descends upon the masses while drawing comparisons to Nickel Creek, Punch Brothers and Fiction Family along the way, with plenty of mandolin to go around. Bruns' voice fits somewhere between the milder side of Nickel Creek's Chris Thile and Switchfoot's Jon Foreman. While Bruns and company are undeniably competent musicians, the presence of the mandolin and the bands' overall instincts for a strong melody prove pivotal in elevating them above the crowd. The additional pieces clearly move them beyond the traditional fare and the result is a band that finds a way to turn mellow pop songs into vibrant and energetic indie-folk while keeping the mood informal. Every song is first rate, but the infectious, blue-grass influenced spiritual, "Please Come My Way", which features an outstanding female lead by vocalist Bethany Kelly is the stand out track on the album. As far as flaws go, there isn't much to speak of. And yet, while there is always room for growth, Churchill's musical intuition and willingness to stretch genre boundaries are sure to keep them moving forward for years to come.
