Mark Mulcahy is not a household name. He was the leader of the alternative rock band Miracle Legion and Polaris as well as the house band for the mid-‘90s TV series The Adventures of Pete & Pete. Mulcahy’s wife died suddenly, leaving him with two daughters to raise and this tribute album was assembled to raise funds. As you can see, Mulcahy had the respect of his more famous peers. Thom Yorke of Radiohead begins things with the naked and stirring “All for the Best.” Michael Stipe of R.E.M. offers up a dense musical wall for “Everything’s Coming Undone.” Dinosaur Jr. slows down “The Backyard” into a trudging ballad. Frank Black pounds out a near Bo Diddley beat for the electro-distorto version of “Bill Jocko.” But this expansive set also features some fine lesser-known talent who find the beauty in Mulcahy’s songwriting gift. David Berkeley brings horns and a gentle demeanor to “Love’s the Only Thing That Shuts Me Up.” Chris Harford and the Band of Changes add their illuminating harmonies to “Micon the Icon.”  The Deluxe Version includes twenty additional impressive tracks (Buffalo Tom with “Butterflies,” the Gravel Pit pummeling “Closer to the Wall”).

LIsten up!

It's about time Mark Mulcahy got his due.

This is one of the great songwriters of the last three decades. Ever since his early music in the brilliant (yet regrettably overlooked) Miracle Legion, he has crafted some of the most inspiring and intelligent music you'll find anywhere. This is corraborated by the long list of great songwriters and artists on this compilation, not the least of which being Thom Yorke and Michael Stipe.

If you know Mark's work, dig in and enjoy. If you don't, well then, I recommend doing a little digging yourselves. You can pick up his solo work on iTunes, but do yourself a huge favor and buy some Miracle Legion albums. "Surprise, Surprise, Surprise," "The Backyard," "Glad" and "Me & Mr. Ray" are gems in a series of tremendous albums.

I've seen Miracle Legion and Mark dozens of times, in several countries and I can tell you that not only is he a great composer, but he and his former bandmates are — and were — just electrifying live. I wish everyone could have seen those shows. I consider them all to be gifts.

So click "Buy Album" and take in the genius that is Mark Mulcahy. You'll be glad you did.

A great collection of cover songs that is sure to recapture the interest of Mark's solo music, along with his other projects - the Miracle Legion and Polaris. I'll always have an affinity for the originals, but this collection of artists have put together some fatastically re-worked pieces of music. This couldn't be a better tribute, for a better cause, for a better artist! I have my pre-order in for the CD with Shout Factory, but couldnt wait to download this. Old fans will love this compilation, and new fans are in for a very special treat! Highly recommended!!!
