Great Eugene Oregon Band

Fantastic band based out of Eugene Oregon. Several of the musicians I personally know are fantastically addicted to everything related to music. Their debut album seems a little thin there is obviously quite a lot of potential. Particularly check out the violin and vocals by Anna Ponto (Do Geese See God and Shine). Pterodactyl is another one of their best songs, if not THE best they have to offer. A great band with lots of potential to the future, hop on the fanwagon quick.

"Circa Vitae" is vaguely unsatisfying

I saw this band on Audiosurf radio and decided to give them a look. They offered this whole album for free from their website, so I got it from there. The beginning interlude lets you hear the experimental side of the band, but the actual songs are like Britpop turned upside down and made American. "Pterodactyl," probably one of the best songs I've ever heard, is a reflective, conflicted, and beautiful song that manages to be fast enough to dance to and slow enough to sleep to. "Stranger" and "Shine" are faster paced tracks, but they lack any visible hooks and didn't get my attention, though their musicianship didn't waiver (Also, the male/female vocal changes in "Shine" are actually pretty cool). In between, the interludes were basically unnoticible; each of them is like an extension of the last track, but slower and with a lot of distortion. "The Tower" is pretty minimalistic, and it might serve Circa Vitae well to dress it up a bit. The album closes with the celebratory-sounding "Infinity Is 8 On Its Side," but Circa Vitae never leaves its great lyrics of introspection. That's probably the other notable song of the EP. Generally, I can see the talent and potential of this band, especially in "Pterodactyl." But the interludes feel indulgent, and the other songs lack hooks that make you want to listen to them again. In short, the songs aren't memorable, and thus the album suffers.

Great band, stupid iTunes

Sorry iTunes, but this "album" is actually an EP, as it is labeled on the case of the material CD, which I recently aquired from the band while at the Country Fair, for three dollars. If the album seems a little thin, this is mostly because this is not an album in the traditional sense; it just happens to have nine tracks. Oh iTunes will you never learn? Anyhow, it's great music, and I can't wait to hear and see more of this band (the drummer was wearing whale slippers when I saw them play. how cool is THAT?), but iTunes has it overpriced. Try buying it from them at a live preformance or finding it for sale elsewhere.
