Good but this is no Drop!
For anyone who hasn't listened to the album Drop yet, I strongly recommend doing so. This album, which is the follow up, is a complete departure from the melodic song writing that shined on Drop. 05Ric and Gavin seem to be rushing this one out the door with very few moments on the record that really capture the listener or provide reason for a second listen. Again, the musicianship is stellar but feels a bit redundant, repetative and way too many odd time signatures thrown in just to throw them in. I would love to see a return to more tonal music and well thought out and constructed songs. Again, still a nice listen but definately not Drop!
Amazing drumming and arrangements, but strange vocals.
I purchased this album having been a longtime Gavin Harrison fan. Needless to say his drumming is always inspiring, and Circles doesn't disappoint in that regard. The musical arrangements that he and 05Rick have created are killer. That being said the vocals/lyrics are just very strange. Maybe that was their intention, but I just felt there were moments where the monotone singing and abstract lyrics got in the way of beautiful music. Just my opinion.
The most creative drumming you'll ever hear.
Gavin Harrison is amazing to me, he is the only drummer I can think of that has his own distinctive style. I think his cymbal work really sets him apart. This album is very complex and is truthfully not for everyone. The way Gavin's rhythms intertwine with 05Ric's vocals is truly art. Part Jazz, Rock, Funk, Alt, and everything else in between. If you want to expand your musical horizons, buy it!
