iTunes Review

My Morning Jacket is one of the most intriguing rock bands of the 21st century because there is nothing they won’t try. Their unusual mix of acoustic guitars and space grooves, of brass bands and subtly modulating keyboards make them an unclassifiable group. The only way to understand what they do is to hear them firsthand and see what sense it makes to you. Circuital is a much more carefully produced album than their previous catalog. There is still deep reverb from time to time, but it is no longer a catchall technique. “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” may be the most straightforward piece they’ve recorded, an acoustic ballad with strings that evokes the early 1970s. “Outta My System” crests on a pop groove inspired by the Beach Boys. “Holdin’ On to Black Metal” has a funky kick that’s punctuated with a fuzztone guitar. “First Light” flows with an impressive gait. “You Wanna Freak Out” has a sashaying innocence. “Victory Dance” strips things down in the chorus to where the each note is held out for maximum effect. The iTunes LP includes a video documentary of the making of the album and handwritten lyrics.

Customer Reviews

Best release from MMJ to date!

Such a chill album, absolutely love everything about it. Purchasing this album is your only choice on this page, the back button does not exist.

Album Oriented Rock has circled back around with Circuital.

10 tunes, 45 minutes of good old fashioned album oriented Rock 'n Roll. MMJ take their influences from across the musical spectrum and turn it into their own sound and on this release they've given a sonic landscape that will take listeners back through their body of work as well as affirming nods to music from 30-40 years ago. Who style anthems, Brit Pop Rock, R&B stylings, reverb and steel pedal guitar may come though at any point. With all the throwaway stuff out today it's just refreshing to hear a band release such a solid start to finish work that doesn't take itself too seriously in style of lyrics like most Independent music. "Slow Slow Tune" = Amazing.

Disappointed

I admire the fact Jim James takes chances. The problem is I haven't liked the last two chances/albums. There are very few bands I've liked as much as I did MMJ for their first 4 albums and disliked as much as I do on their last two.

Although they first presented themselves as devotees of Neil Young's country-tinged classic rock, My Morning Jacket widened their sound throughout the early 2000s, embracing everything from neo-psychedelia to Americana, funk, prog, and reggae. By the time Evil Urges arrived in mid-2008, they had successfully molded themselves into Kentucky's answer to Wilco: a band...
