Album Review

After the fuzz-rock revivalism of Are You Gonna Go My Way, Lenny Kravitz seems to have settled into a comfortable groove, alternating between early-'70s album rock and early-'70s soul, with the occasional Prince flourish thrown in for good measure. Circus is the weakest of Kravitz's albums, simply because he didn't change his style in a distinctive manner, replicating the sound of Are You Gonna Go My Way instead. To compound his problems, Kravitz kicks off the record with "Rock and Roll Is Dead," a workmanlike rewrite of "Are You Gonna Go My Way" that lacks hooks. However, after one more half-hearted rocker, Circus begins to open up, as Kravitz turns in a series of ballads and lightly psychedelic mid-tempo pop numbers, which prove to be his real strength.

Good Stuff!

Whoever wrote the iTunes review of this is an idiot. Saying Rock and Roll is Dead is a rewrite of Are You Gonna Go My Way is a silly thing to say. So.... they both have big riffs, so they're the same? This person would probably rip on Led Zeppelin for not changing their style enough! Clean your ears out. Thats a brilliant, heavy hitting riff!

Call me crazy...

...but there is some good stuff happening on this album. I happen to enjoy Rock n Roll is Dead despite the review above. Magdalene and God is Love are very good soul starter songs for rock listners.

My Favorite Lenny Album

I am a die hard Lenny Kravitz fan and this album is the reason. With the song "Circus" I was instantly hooked to him. Lenny does not get the respect he deserves as evident by the above iTunes review and all of his other iTunes reviews. This is a great album for anyone who is just getting started listening to Lenny Kravitz. Lenny is a very dynamic artist and likes to play around with different genres, this album is a perfect example of that. Simply Lenny at his best. I highly recommend this album!

There may have been other "retro" rock acts before him, but Lenny Kravitz was one of the first to not be pigeonholed to a single style as he touched upon such genres as soul, funk, reggae, hard rock, psychedelic, folk, and ballads over the years. Born in New York on May 26, 1964 (his mother was actress Roxie Roker, best-known for her role as Helen Willis on the popular TV series The Jeffersons, and his father was a TV producer), Kravitz was raised in Los Angeles, where he found himself around countless...
