iTunes Review

The number of the beast (that’s 666, kids) is recounted; the martial rhythms of metal are instituted; and singer M. Shadows incorporates as many of the techniques of emo and screamo as he can jam into these 11 tracks. For their third album, Huntington Beach, California’s Avenged Sevenfold aren’t exactly giving a history lesson in heavy metal, but they have learned quite a few tricks of the genre. There’s the epic scope of their seven-plus minute compositions (and there are four of those here) where they counterbalance their merciless assault with atmospherics that suggest one day they will “mature” to mainstream accessibility. (Don’t laugh, it happened for Metallica.) There’s also the steamrolling passion of their shorter tunes (the economical five-minutes of “Burn It Down”), proving that AS are jacks of all metal trades. Guitarists Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates obviously know how to employ a twin-guitar attack – even if it is occasionally blurred by cellos or the occasional ballad.

One of my favorite albums out of nearly 300

This is a truly amazing album. I am a big metal fan, and even though this has amazing guitar solos and everything, it is not screamo. It is different from Waking The Fallen and is much like their self-entitled album (yes, it came out after this one) but this is just a totally unique sound. None of their music is boring; not even their slow songs (not dance-slow, mostly just not as loud as the others.) Here is my breakdown:

Beast And The Harlot: 9/10. The reason it is not 10/10 is because I have heard it too many times. This is on Guitar Hero 2 and Guitar Hero Smash Hits, and I have played it on there a couple dozen times, along with the 15 times I have listened through it on my iTouch. This really is what the whole album is going to sound like.

Burn It Down: 9/10. Better than some people give it credit for. This song is truly epic.

Blinded In Chains: 9/10. Is it just me, or does the beginning sound like the drumming right before the solo in Metallica's "One"?

Bat Country: 10/10. Arguably Avenged Sevenfold's best song ever. It really grows on you, so it will sound even better the seventeenth time than the first time.

Trashed And Scattered: 9/10. Kind of like Burn It Down and Blinded In Chains. Simply epic.

Seize The Day: 7/10. Never really picks up. Still a great song, but just not as good as the others.

Sidewinder: 7/10. I'm just not feeling it. Like it can't decide between a fast-paced song and a slower-paced song.

The Wicked End: 10/10. For some reason, I really like this song, more than Bat Country, even.

Strength Of The World: 8/10. Slower, but still pretty cool.

Betrayed: 9/10. Should go along with Trashed and Scattered, Burn It Down, and Blinded In Chains.

M.I.A.: 6/10. The most boring song on the album, I'd say.

So, that's my review. I would definately buy this album, no matter if you are a metal fan, alternative fan, or just classic rock fan. Everyone who listens to real music should get this album. It's got a little bit of everything.

Its worth it

I agree with Nus4au2. This is a great album, though not as good as Appetite for Destruction. But it is stil one of the best albums in the world right now. These guys really pull it off, and anyone who thinks its a waste of time, at least listen to Bat Country. That should change your mind.

One of the best
