Album Review

All of the titles here make some kind of reference to cosmic issues of good and evil on the planet Earth, but the suggestive wordplay doesn't make this music much different from that on Jean-Luc Ponty's previous Atlantic outings. Ponty plays with his accustomed fluid virtuosity; the five-piece group ranges from standard Ponty fusion to mild funk; the rhythm section is sometimes more grandly recorded than before; and occasionally, one can hear some embryonic sequenced structures that would be explored further on in the decade. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

Civilized Evil

Jean-Luc Ponty ROCKS ! This was an amazing album 29 years ago, and it is still amazing today.

28 Years ago......and still OUTSTANDING!

i bought this album in 1981, and have rediscovered it in digital format in 2008. EVERY song a pleasure to listen to.....even the slow grooves have my head swaying back and forth wishing i could play the violin. If you've never heard of Jean Luc, get ready to to be taken to another level.....28 years ago?????

If you don't know JLP...

I've been listening to JLP since the beginning, and this is my favorite JLP album, followed by Cosmic Messenger. The layering of the instruments, the rhythmic dimensions, and the awesome creativity make for great listening even 30+ years later. If you don't know JLP, start here (I don't give 5 stars lightly).

It has been a long, fascinating odyssey for Jean-Luc Ponty, who started out as a straight jazz violinist only to become a pioneer of the electric violin in jazz-rock in the '70s and an inspired manipulator of sequencers and synthesizers in the '80s. At first merely amplifying his violin in order to be heard, he switched over to electric violin and augmented it with devices that were associated with electric guitarists and keyboardists, like Echoplex machines, distortion boxes, phase shifters, and...
