iTunes Review

The very definition of a D.I.Y. success story, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah has spent their first few months topping independent record store charts solely on account of press support and (gasp!) good songs. And what do they sound like? Quite simple actually: Wobbly, strikingly genuine vocals that constantly garner David Byrne comparisons, and warm, mid-fi multi-tracking, and keyboard melodies as broken-in and comforting as the vintage clothing CYHSY fans prefer. It’s nothing new, but it’s a modern indie-pop classic nonetheless.

For the Unimpressed and Unconverted:

Give them a second listen. And a third. And a fourth. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah had so much buzz last year, it frankly got annoying. What band could be THAT good? So, I listened. I wasn't impressed. Then, I saw them perform on a late night show and was so numbed. I was numbed by the talent that was oozing from my television set. And I listened again. I can't even try to compare CYHSY to any other band in existence; they are completely their own. Not restraining themselves to convention, the band explores their sound with several instrumental tracks (which rival parts of the rest of the record) as well as an odd sing-a-long opening. CYHSY utilizes every single member of its five-piece ensemble: at every moment someone is either singing, tambourine-ing, or strumming. Not a single moment of boredom exists for 39 minutes. Unfortunately, the 30 second glimpse of each song cheats the listener. The full potential can only be realized by a complete and thorough listen...and then there's no turning back.

Crap Your Pants Say Blah

Flat out horrible, a big disappointment after all the hype. The music is actually decent, somewhat original and catchy...but this guys vocals have got to be the worst I've ever heard. Like if you were to run your teeth down a chalkboard instead of your fingernails. The most grating, whining, unlistenable crap to ever be uttered into a microphone I think. Why did the band decide to go with this kind of vocal "styling" when they could have a really good sound otherwise? It makes no sense whatsoever to purposely force your voice to waver and crack with every out of tune note you "sing". I don't understand how all these reviewers could give such high remarks. Please save your money.

There are 3 groups of people with this album:

There are the indie hipster kids who dive into this because IT'S INDIE!! There are also indie-hater kids who trash the album to be "cool" (these are the same people who said the strokes sucked a few years back and now have This Is It in vinyl in their dorm rooms.) The third group of people is people who listen to this as music, not as hype. And as music, it's damn good. If you don't like the singing, it's not for you, and you should feel regret; you're missing one of the most triumphant, happy albums of the year. They're not a Talking Heads rip off band; they're not perfectly original, either; no debut album should be. This shows their influences well, and it makes me think that in years to come we'll be seeing some amazing work from these guys.

Years Active: '00s

In the middle of 2005, the Brooklyn/Philadelphia-based Clap Your Hands Say Yeah were being touted as the hottest unsigned band in the U.S. Their self-titled debut was self-produced, self-released, self-promoted, and self-distributed, with a great deal of help from the grassroots indie blog machine. There was so much online interest in the band...
