Album Review
Classic Ray Stevens isn't an accurate title for this nine-track collection. There are no hits here, only re-recorded versions of such novelties as "If Ten Percent Is Good Enough for Jesus (It Oughta Be Enough for Uncle Sam)," "The Higher Education of Ole Blue," "Super Cop," "If You and Yo' Folks Like Me and My Folks," "The All-American Two Week Summer Family Vacation," and "The Motel Song." Although there are better collections available, this isn't a bad choice for casual fans on a budget.
Customer Reviews
I think that it IS classic Ray Stevens.
This may not be the best of Ray Stevens, but it certainly has his songs that are his style. And it's called "Classic Ray Stevens" because, even though the songs are all newer(or later)than the one's we've been used to, it's still Ray Stevens. He hasn't strayed from the formula that keep his songs brilliant. The All American Twoo Week Summer Family vacation is great, along with the Hotel Song. And I still can't forget the line in Jake McClusky about his wife when she" soaked the place with kerosene and set the whole dang place on fire!"
Ray Stevens comedy
this CD came along in 1993 on the Curb label. It's title comes from the reference to the CD's cover: a bust of Ray sitting on top of the piano. It's a spoof of Beethovan's famous bust...and we all know Beethovan was a classical musician and this CD was called "Classic Ray Stevens" as a result. It features 10 all-new songs...nine of them comical and one, "Meanwhile", while not a straight-forward serious song, it isn't comical altogether. It's one of those songs that blend both styles into one. Two of the songs, "The Bricklayer's Song" and "If Ten Percent Is Good Enough for Jesus" were recorded at his Branson, Missouri theater. He had a hit theater down there during the 1991-1993 seasons. Other highlights from the album are "Super Cop", "The Ballad of Jake McCluskey", and "The Motel Song".
