Customer Reviews

I'm cooler for having heard it!

Ready for a journey? Climb aboard, strap yourself in and enjoy the ride. Uncle Clint is driving this train and he's going to make sure you have a smile on your face the entire trip! I'm not going to give away all the surprises in this album (and believe me, there are plenty!) Clint Bierman and The Necessary Means keep things interesting with key changes, rockin' solos and sophisticated beats. They totally avoid the trap of relying too much on the cool riff; rather, they use them as spring boards to take the listener on a journey, always bringing you back home at the end so you never feel lost. Each track is fresh and unique, but they all relate to each other so you don't feel like you changed trains halfway through the album. I'm no musician, but even I know a great band when I hear one. If you like Booker T and the MGs or Steve Miller's blues work, you will thoroughly enjoy this album. It's modern. It's jazzy. It's the next step. Enjoy!

Elegant Fried-Grease Funk Groove, Superb Recording

Click. Got that right. This stellar instrumental recording manages to evince both a fried-grease funk groove and an elegance at the same time. Think chocolate and red wine.
Clint Bierman, known for the bands The Grift and Honeywell, as well as countless side projects as a producer, singer and hired-gun guitar slinger, takes an impressive leap forward here, demonstrating depth and maturity as a composer and arranger. The warmth, sustain, and intuition of Bierman’s guitar work remains intact (the solo on “Thanks for the ADD” is brilliant), but the emphasis here is on composition and impeccable ensemble playing.
Bassist Peter Day, with lux tone and effortless feel, hooks up with the wonderfully musical drummer Sean Preece for an underpinning that is both focused and relaxed. Leon Campos is given room to move on keys, and rises to the challenge with a variety of sounds from chunky organ squonks to melodic piano reminiscent of Chuck Leavell’s Sea Level-era playing.
The horns are an integral component to the sound, expertly arranged and executed by Pat MacCarthy.
Fans of modern groove (MMW, Lettuce, etc.) should add this to their playlists.
Check out “Scratchzilla,” with raunchy effects from dj Jeff Vallone, “Chasing Delaney,” with a classic Phish-like motif, and “Twenty Eleven,” a gorgeous, Philly-soul/jazz-tinged piece that has a timeless quality.
The only fault I can find with this recording is the brevity of it, but word has it that Bierman & The Necessary Means are already at work on a follow-up. Consider me in waiting.
