iTunes Review

The lead guitarist for power-pop stalwarts Fountains of Wayne, Jody Porter performs pop music that could easily find itself being placed with his band. However, that band, already dominated by the works of Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood, leaves Porter in the role of George Harrison, forced to issue his own songs on his own solo albums. It’s a great situation for power-pop lovers as these songs are bright and crisp and every bit as powerful as anything by Fountains of Wayne. If they lack the immediate commercial eye of Fountains and their ironic subtexts, the songs bring back the hooks in place. “Twilite,” “A Beautiful Life” and “Aurora” are immediately friendly on the ears. “To the Moon” and “Good to Be Alone” have a luminous beauty to their slow, forlorn melodies. “You’re Not Alone” cuts with the tight, jamming guitar work that’s made Porter an in-demand session guitarist with musicians such as Jesse Malin, David Mead, Juliana Hatfield and others. So many great tunes to choose from: “Waiting for the Stars,” “In Between Time,” “The Kids Get Higher.” Porter deserves to be a star on his own terms.

Rock is alive

In terms of first solo albums, this is an awesome album from guitarist/vocalist Jody Porter from Fountains of Wayne. Kind of a throwback sound with a refined finish to it. Jody Porter has a strong voice, excellent guitar chops and solid songwriting. This album is overflowing with raw energy, it's a great rock album. If you are looking for progressive or avant-garde then you may want to look elsewhere, but if you are somebody who wishes rock wasn't dead here's your testament that it is not, Jody Porter-"Close to the Sun".

Awesome album

With Close to the Sun, Jody Porter puts out a terrific straightforward rock album. The songs are memorable and catchy, and Porter's guitar work is stellar throughout. Highly recommended for those holdouts who still like their rock to come with hooks included.

Stunning Solo Debut — Fountains of Wayne's Jody Porter

Fountains of Wayne lead guitarist, Jody Porter's, stunning solo debut, Close To The Sun, bridges the gap between the pitch-perfect power pop of The Beatles to the sprawling orchestral psychedelia of mid-career Pink Floyd all the way to the blitzkrieging guitar bursts of post-punk icons Television. All of this is lyrically suffused with occasional optimism (Beautiful Life) and poignant, breathtaking allusions to painful isolation, broken promises, and what Porter seems to refer to as love, yet most would refer to as assault with an emotional jackhammer. — Larry Queen, QueenSizeMusic

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Although best known as the lead guitarist for power pop veterans Fountains of Wayne, Jody Porter cut his teeth in the early '90s with the Belltower, a New York outfit that featured the vocals of his then wife, Britta Philips. The group relocated to London in 1990 and remained there for the decade's first half, issuing several recordings that merged shoegazing guitars with a pop/rock sensibility. The Belltower then returned to America, where Adam Schlesinger briefly climbed aboard as the band's bassist....
