Album Review

The strongest studio recording by Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, Closer to It! is Auger's classic. Featuring his best-known composition, "Happiness Is Just Around the Bend," this album soars on the strength of Auger's multiple keyboard attack. Auger himself takes the lead vocal slot for the first time here, and though he relies on multi-tracking to fill out his sound, his vocals fit the music better than former (and later to return) vocalist Alex Ligertwood's did. Side two features covers of jazz classic "Compared to What" and Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues," both of which add new depth to the original compositions. Lennox Laington's congas give the music a Santana-type of feel, and the whole album percolates from beginning to end. [The Fuel 2000 reissue adds four bonus tracks made up of alternate mixes of three album tracks and a previously unreleased alternate version of "Happiness Is Just Around the Bend."]

A Classic Album from a Class Act

I bought this when it came out in '73(or so) and instantly fell in love with it, still have the vinyl. Went to see the band in '74 in St.Paul during a snowstorm, at an old theater I can't remember the name of. We're standing outside the theatre and a bunch of guys are walking down the street towards with guitar cases in hand, it was the whole band with Brian, chatted with them outside for a bit before they went in. Nectar was the headline act and they didn't show up because of the weather so Brian asked the crowd if it was ok if they played the rest of the night and the crowd went nuts. Anybody who wanted to leave could get their ticket refunded but not a soul left the place. It was a great nite of music!m Thanks Brian and the band!

The Express Line

I wore out my vinyl copy years ago. One of my all time favorites. I've been checking periodically on iTunes for this CD, and finally it's here! Can you say "Yeah"!

Whenever You're Ready

...keyboard driven, jazz-influenced, but on the rock side of the jazz-rock fusion. One of my all-time favorites for listenability.
