Album Review

In a short period of time, Josh Groban went from being a talented vocalist ready to enter college to the new prince of romantic music with a best-selling debut album and highly rated PBS special. The successful combination of his classical crossover croon, boyish good looks, and association with überproducer David Foster helped Groban become a sensation. His sophomore studio disc, Closer, stays comfortably within the boundaries built by his debut collection as Foster once again helms a modest set of pseudo-classical pop songs dreamily sung in various languages. Listening to Groban, it is easy to understand why this MOR style suits him so well as his maturing voice is not grand enough to fully embrace operatic material yet remains too rich and technical for typical mainstream pop music. On Closer he works within his limitations and the result is a more consistent listen than the scattershot debut with his voice sounding comfortable performing these emotional European-inspired pop songs. The best tunes bookend the disc as the atmospheric opener, "Oceano," sets an ominous tone while the mysterious "Never Let Go" is a welcome collaboration with Deep Forest that allows Groban to successfully move away from the saccharine ballads and grow as a vocalist. However, there is still plenty of romance included for the PBS crowd as "When You Say You Love Me" painfully cries out like a rejected Celine Dion cut and the Celtic-infused bombast of Secret Garden's "You Raise Me Up" plays like the sequel to his debut's most famous song, "To Where You Are." In addition to his improved vocals, Groban contributes three co-writing efforts that include "Never Let Go," and shows that there is a future for him to evenly match his skills as a vocalist and a songwriter. Although the disc still focuses on bland rose petal confessions, its highlights point in the right direction and bring Groban Closer to creating an album that eliminates the sick sweetness while remaining a tasty, satisfying treat.

Tiger Groban?

There is something to be said for an artist that essentially defines a musical category. Sure, the title of "Pop Opera" has been around for a while, with the Three Tenors and Andrea Bocelli representing this class of music well. Josh brings a youth to this normally staid genre much the same way Tiger Woods does to golf, with experience well beyond their years. Josh is a phenomenal talent that sings with great emotion on a wide variety of incredible pieces. Among my favorites: - You Raise Me Up: Easily could be played on any top 40 station. This is the kind of song that could have been done by Bette Middler (a la "Wind Beneath My Wings"), but is bolder in its arrangement with several "take your breath away" moments, whereas the former just seems to ooze. - Mi Mancherai: Anyone who can listen to this should be able to know what the song is about without having to know the words. Joshua Bell's violin blends so well with Josh's vocals that you feel the sense lost love and the emotional emptiness of the narrator in this flat out gorgeous song. - When You Say You Love Me: Josh takes you to a place several times in this song that you just don't see coming. Again, could be a great radio tune. - Oceano: I must look like a complete goober to everyone who sees me driving while this song is on, as I conduct my own personal orchestra and sing along to a language I know nothing about. One of the more up-tempo songs on the album. - Remember When it Rained: Lots of friends comment to me that they have a lot more respect for musicians that can write and perform their songs, rather than just sing. This song shows that Josh really is a consummate musician. He co-wrote the song, and plays piano... quite well I might add. While I've only mentioned my favorites here, quite honestly, all the songs are good in that they span an emotional spectrum in an hour. No, it's not everybody's cup of tea, but neither is golf. Josh's gift to us is that he transcends beyond his genre's normal audience. Do not miss this recording!

Bright Orange is Good

Why do we all love Josh Groban? Because, deep down inside, we wish all our loved ones were like him. His songs and lyrics direct a sense of faithfulness, modesty, and belief in oneself. I felt as if I could do anything I wished: climb Mt. Everest, dive through the sky, run through the city, sing into the night, balance on a matchstick, find true love, and fly. A delicious mix of voice and passion, Josh Groban brought a bridge of pop and opera to my feet. I was gratefully willing to cross it. With Josh by my side, I explored the foreign lands of inspiration and love. Before I met Josh, I was a pitiful, medieval farmer. Now, I can be everything. A simple push from this man motivated me beyond anything a Z100 artist could. (just imagine what he could bring you!) I owe you one, my one, my only, Josh Groban.

Wicked Good

The best album to be released in years of any genre. Unreal trackswith raw power and emotion. We need more of this type of work. Excellent stuff!
