Customer Reviews
Yoko Kanno is a genius.
I have a feeling I'm preaching to the choir with this review but, here it goes. Yoko Kanno is a genius. Why do I say this? Well, if she only wrote the Cowboy Bebop anime soundtrack she would be someone to watch. A composer of note who has taken the jazz idiom into the 21st century. She also wrote the soundtrack to the anime Escaflowne. That series contains one of the most haunting themes in modern film history and with it's traditional classical elements is easily the equal of any recent western soundtrack. Those who have heard the music from the Ghost In the Shell (SAC) series know that the roughly seventy tracks she wrote for this anime were special. Pop, jazz, electronica, even elements of progressive rock - Kanno mastered them all with this one and made it look easy. There Is SO MUCH more. The western "music genius" Prince, Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder, take your pick, maybe do one album of twelve tracks every two years. In the last twenty years Kanno has composed produced and arranged for over ONE HUNDRED albums. Her output and consistent quality is STAGGERING. Each shows a composer whose experimentations always deliver, who never phones in a track and who always manages to make each genre her own. Pick this collection up (Exaelitus, Lion Man and Dear Blue are beautiful) and hunt out the CDs (gasp! yes, I said CDs) of Ghost In the Shell (SAC), Turn A Gundam, Cowboy Bebop and any of her work with Maaya Sakamoto. It is very promising news that these Japanese tracks are even for sale on iTunes USA. However, there is no reason anyone should wait until Kanno's record label allows iTunes to make more of her musical output available in America. Her work is that good.
Great intro to a versatile composer and performer
Yoko Kanno is a prolific Japanese composer and performer. Like most Americans, I first heard her work for the anime "Cowboy Bebop" and "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex." This album, a collection of music from Japanese television commercials, shows off just part of her versatility as a composer. The first three tracks are country, a 1960s spy theme, and cute 1930s Shirley Temple-style ditty. GitS:SAC lovers should at least try track 7, an electronic piece with vocalist ORIGA, and probably should just buy the whole album.
I have only one track - and still 5 stars
I love her work with Origa and when I saw the song Exaelitus I had to give it a try. Bolstered by a review on here I downloaded the song. I felt like crying... Not because of the purchase, but because it was one of the most incredible musical works I have ever had the privilege to listen to. It is pure beauty. Origa's vocals are astounding and the composition from Kanno could not be more perfectly entwined with each other. I can not say how much this work (to call it a song does it a great disservice) will floor you. I plan on buying the whole album just because of this one download - that is the impact 'Exaelitus' will have on you.
