iTunes Review

Already a country music icon with a string of Top Ten hits behind her, Loretta Lynn reached a new plateau of fame with 1970's Coal Miner's Daughter. The album's classic title track is an unvarnished portrait of Lynn's childhood, rendered with poignancy and pride. It became her signature song and, later, the basis for her autobiography and a 1980 Academy Award-winning biopic starring Sissy Spacek. Beyond this tune, the album boasts such Lynn-penned standouts as the cheater's lament "Any One, Any Worse, Any Where" and the rollicking "What Makes Me Tick." She also shines on emotive readings of Conway Twitty's "Hello Darlin'," Marty Robbins' "Too Far" and Kris Kristofferson's "For The Good Times," among other covers. A landmark country release, Coal Miner's Daughter captures Lynn in her prime, tapping into the honky-tonk tradition while offering social commentaries and personal revelations with biting honesty and down-home humor.
