iTunes Review

Delicate and droll, Princeton’s Cocoon Of Love is a collection of finely wrought songs tinged with nostalgia and yearning. Traces of everyone from the Left Banke to 10,000 Maniacs and the Magnetic Fields can be detected in these tracks. Quick musical quotes (like the Ronettes-style riff in “Show Some Love, When Your Man Gets Home”) pop up in unexpected spots. Most of all, the group is reminiscent of the Kinks during their storied “Waterloo Sunset” phase — tunes like “Sadie & Andy” and “Korean War Memorial” have the wistful sensibility of vintage Ray Davies. Going beyond mere pastiche, Princeton brings an idiosyncratic intelligence to this album, blurring the lines between ‘30s garden-party gentility and 21st-century indie-rock cool. The band strolls through the tiki-bar ambiance of “Stunner Shades In Heaven” and the soca-scented terrain of “Calypso Gold,” with a bemused, slightly downcast air. The moonlit reverie of “Sylvie” contrasts nicely with the folk-rock vigor of “I Left My Love in Nagasaki.” The band’s lyrics sparkle with vivid detail and bittersweet humor.

Amazing Indie Pop!

I've seen these guys twice in DC. Once with Ra Ra Riot and Maps and Atlases (you couldn't ask for a better show) and then with Art Brut. Loved them after I saw them the first time. Soon after I bought the album during a late night study session and it definitely helped me through it. They have varied layers and interesting lyrics-just a very well thought out album all together. Some call them intellectual indie, but to me that's irrelevant; they crank out catchy songs that you'll have on repeat for a good week. Also check out their EP and hilarious Christmas song. If you like to brag about discovering a band first to your hipster friends, nab this album before they blow up.

Feel good music

Princeton opened for Ra Ra Riot and they were incredible! Their music has a feel good Beach Boy-esque style to it and I am sure they are going to be really famous quite soon!

Amazing group!

Princeton has been one of my favorite groups for years now ever since I found their first CD A Case of the Emperor's Clothes. I'm happy they're doing so well! If you haven't, you need to listen to their music now! It's the perfect blend of thoughtful lyrics and unique melodies; like nothing you've heard before. And that's a good thing.

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Princeton formed in 2005 when twin brothers Jesse and Matt Kivel and their childhood friend Ben Usen teamed up while all three were studying abroad in London. Given that they'd left most of their instruments back home in California, they only had access to the basics: an acoustic guitar, a keyboard, a tambourine, and an egg shaker. In spite of these lean conditions, the trio managed to record enough material for a mini-album, A Case of the Emperor's Clothes, which they self-released the following...
