iTunes Review

A deliriously eclectic artifact of the psychedelic era, Cold Fact is the debut of Detroit singer songwriter Rodriguez, a Detroit factory worker with a distinctive gift for incisive songwriting and elaborate psychedelia that evokes genres as diverse as salsa, country blues, and Spector-style studio pop. Rodriguez’s brittle but pleasing vocals and surreal lyricism most nearly recall Donovan’s late-period excursions into hippie mysticism, yet Cold Fact is far from derivative, and is particularly notable for its adventurous production and inventive arrangements — many of which were the product of Rodriguez’s collaboration with Motor City guitar virtuoso Dennis Coffey, whose distortion-drenched lead work provides some of the album’s most fascinating musical moments. Tunes like “Hate Street Dialogue” and “Inner City Blues” provide a compelling portrait of Detroit as a decaying city on the brink of civil unrest. It bears the stamp of its era and Cold Fact remains a vivid and compelling document of a particular moment in musical and cultural history.

Lost for 38 years

Sixto Rodriguez is a Detroit retired day laborer who recorded this album 38 years ago in his basement and it never took off. He never learned until 10 years ago that he was a platinum selling artist in South Africa, and never received any royalties from those sales. This album has just been re-released and really illustrates the conflict of urban America in the early 1970's. Give it a listen, he's incredible. He's performing in Detroit for the first time EVER on September 20. He's now 66 years old, so hopefully he can live out his golden years with the respect he deserves if people buy his record.

Wow!

A lost jewel, I was listening to NPR on the way home from work and they did a piece on Rodriguez. I was instantly entrhalled and captivated by his sound and story. I and have enjoyed every song on the album and would recommend it to anybody who enjoys the lost art of folk and blues music.

what an incredible find this lp is

I read a lot of rock magazines, and this lp has popped up numerous times recently in reviews, so the curiosity got the best of me...well I will tell you, this is a lost masterpiece. I think his voice is kind of reminiscent more of Donovan than Dylan's, but that's not a bad thing. The lyrics are amazing, great folky vibes, fuzztone guitar, passionate performances. I don't have one fave track in particular, it's just an lp i love to listen to from beginning to end, much like 'forever changes' or 'pet sounds'. BUY IT NOW!
