Album Review

George Benson rebels against the machine and comes out with an all-instrumental album, his first in 11 years and also his first full teaming with onetime protégé, acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh. Klugh sounds much more mature and forthcoming here than he did as a teenager in Benson's CTI days. Yet Benson still blows him away with his effortless swing, endless invention (within the constraints of the carefully controlled arrangements, however) and totally assured placement of the notes. "Mimosa" has some especially fluid work by Benson, with Klugh serving as an effective foil. The backing is mostly an electronic wash, though underpinned by solid funk support from former Benson bandmembers Harvey Mason and Paulinho Da Costa. The biggest hang-up are the so-so tunes, which both guitarists gratefully transcend whenever they solo. While Collaboration disappointed many guitar fans back in 1987 who were hoping for a more energetic session, time has underlined and strengthened its musical virtues. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

The three best tracks on this album are...

...Mimosa, Dreamin' & Mt. Airy Road...

If you ever drive down Mt. Airy Road outside philly while listening to this tune, you'll understand how awesome it is to hear while driving.

Dreamin' is just a good track for hearing two really awesome jazz guitar players go at it and have a lot of fun while doing it. It is subtle but it has a good groove to it.

Mimosa's entrance builds the excitement into the guitar parts...gives you that feel of being in a somewhat fancy restaurant or a night on the town, but not in the midst of the excitement, but rather indulged in sophistication and feeling good.

If you don't buy the album, then don't pass over these 3 tracks as single pick-up's

An acoustic guitarist with a very pretty tone, Earl Klugh does not consider himself a jazz player and thinks of Chet Atkins as being his most important influence. Klugh played on a Yusef Lateef album when he was 15 and gained recognition in 1971 for his contributions to George Benson's White Rabbit record. He played regularly with Benson in 1973, was a member of Return to Forever briefly in 1974, and then in the mid-'70s, began recording as a leader. After a couple well-received solo albums on different...
