Album Review

John L. Cooper has finally hit his stride with Skillet. Collide is a disc that chugs along with guitars out front, screaming vocals, and a raw intensity that strips the band of its electronic nuances. Opting for a much more aggressive sound, the band leans on guitar riffs while synths are more tastefully added. Songs like "Forsaken" and "Savior" are perfect examples of unadulterated rock bliss. Even when the band veers away from the heaviness à la the well-placed orchestration on "Collide," the meat of the tune still ends up rocking out. With this disc, Skillet takes a firm stance toward honing a sound that is marketed to Generation X. With cuts to back it, they may have found the right vehicle to reach those ears.

What can I say?

I'm one of those few non-Christians who really love Christian rock, and Skillet's "Collide" is one of the greatest rock albums ever, Christian or otherwise. This album is utterly amazing. (And perfect for road trips, if I may say so myself from personal experience.) Virtually every track has the right combination of awesome guitar, pounding drums, powerful vocals, and some pretty complicated baselines that are incredible to hear. The two not-so-rock-type songs, "A Little More" and "Under My Skin," are also really good. Oh, and if you're hesitating on this album because you're thinking, "Oh, this is Christian rock, it's going to be all preachy," think again. The lyrics may be worshipful, but they're definitely far from preachy. And actually, it's a bit of a relief to hear really great rock without profanity or sex or drugs in it. If you want something different from mainstream rock and metal bands, prepare to be blown away by "Collide."

Slammin, in your face lyrics, hard to beat!

Skillet has really done it this time, with edgier, tighter music and equally as tight vocals. John's vocal chords absolutely shred in this album, with Ben's gritty guitars, Lori's exceptional rhythms, and Korey's keys/guitars/vocals overwhelming the songs with a wall of intense sound. The lyrics are top-notch, as Cooper renounces such devastations as teen depression and suicide. The song "Collide" is gripping, to say the least. This is by far one of the best this group has produced. Great job, guys!

The Best Yet!

If you are looking for the best heavy rock sound in Christian music, this is it! I've heard them all and this album outweighs the rest. On top of this, the band is dedicated to spreading the Good News at their concerts and through the lyrics. SEE THEM LIVE!! I've been to many concerts, both secular and Christian, but this one is the most energetic of any concert that I've attended.
