Album Review

In a way, the career of 36 Crazyfists mirrors rock bands of the early to mid-'70s, when many artists were allowed a window of several albums to steadily build a following and establish themselves (as compared to the early 21st century, where you're expected to score a chart-topper right off the bat — or else, bye-bye). With their last album being 36 Crazyfists' biggest chart success yet (2008's The Tide and Its Takers), it appears as though its follow-up, 2010's Collisions and Castaways, should be the album that serves as their long-awaited breakthrough. And if they do breakthrough, it will not be because they changed or softened their sound in hopes of mass acceptance, as 36 Crazyfists still specialize in hard-hitting metal, with vocals that alternate between hardcore-like screaming (usually the verses) and more melodic singing (usually the choruses). In other words, Collisions and Castaways is exactly what you'd expect from a new 36 Crazyfists release. Kicking things off is "In the Midnights," which features an acoustic guitar interlude that eventually shape-shifts into multiple overdubbed electric guitars and then rapid-fire metal (which brings to mind the same formula that Metallica made popular — specifically, "Battery" from Master of Puppets). Elsewhere, there's plenty of the aforementioned "heavy verse/melodic chorus" setup, particularly "Whitewater" and "Anchors," while they do mix things up a bit on "Reviver" and "Caving in Spirals," two tracks that focus more on the melodic side of things. In an age when it seems like more and more bands fall by the wayside after only and album or two, 36 Crazyfists are certainly one of metal's most reliable workhorses, as evidenced throughout Collisions and Castaways.

Alaska grown

These guys once again make us Alaskans proud of out metal!

36! 36! 36! 36! 36!!!!

Always loved these guys and always will and an awesome 5th studio album! Still rocking heavy after all these years. Here's many more from our beloved Alaskan legends!!

Great Album!!

I have been listening to these guys ever since "Bitterness The Star", and every album does take on it's own entity. I cant find one bad song of theirs. On ANY of the albums that they have put out. This one especially, has a very intersting vibe to it. The Opening track "In the Midnights" is a great way to Start the CD. It EXPLODES!! It also has a great atmosphere to it that you usually feel at one of their shows. "Whitewater" dosn't stop. "Long Road To Late Nights" is a great reflective song. One that you would listen to when you need to just stop and think or calm yourself from a situation. "Reviver" is a good "radio" riendly song that just like "We Gave It Hell" on the last record, is still heavy and catchy and honestly is my song that I honestly listen to when im walking into work. I've suffered a great family loss recently and had a huge promotioon at work and trying to change my life around and "Reviver" has been a good song to listen to and represent all of the "new life" that i'm trying to build. "Caving In Spirals" hits a nerve for me to. Deserter is incredible for the guys to the album. A little heavier than what im used to for the guys. But I listen to heavier music than theirs and I can say "WOW"! Now, for the unexpected "Waterhaul 2", I will honestly say that it brought a few tears to my eyes when I read the track listing online for the new album before it came out. And when I listened to it, Iwas more than blown away. I was in a state of awe for the whole song and feel myself inside of the song in a sense. In a general opinion of the new CD, I am in awe. love this new piece from them and love and support them for EVERYTHING that they have gave to us. The new album has me in a state of AWE and im impressed and am without ANY bit of dsiapointment. I love it and this is my opinion of it. I hope that someone will read this and feel the urge to listen to it and appreciate their work as much as I have!! Thank you! And THANK YOU 36!!!
