Robert Randolph learned his trade as a pedal steel guitarist at his Orange, NJ church and his group made an immediate impact on the jam-band circuit, opening for the North Mississippi All-Stars and Medeski, Martin & Wood. Up until now, their recordings have focused on capturing the group’s dexterous improvisatory skills and their boundless energy. With their second studio album (and third overall), the Family still primarily fly the jam-band flag, but they do so with a greater ear towards making sure the song doesn’t get lost in the maze of solos. A few guests stop by – Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews – and songwriting credits include a number of veteran names, but it’s still Randolph’s show. It’s his thick tone that smothers these tracks and cousin Marcus Randolph’s drums that cement these grooves. While the band play in the here and now, their influences are clearly born from ‘70s textures. “Angels” touches on Gamble & Huff Philly Soul, while “Diane” sources the ghosts of Funkadelic. It’s a soulful brew all around.

Great Stuff
Robert Randolph & The Family Band new album is great. All of the music sounds amazing and is filled with life. Personally I bought this album for my Saturday Night parties. So if you like to jam this is your mix. Also note to NBC good choice for premier week.
A Fantastic Sophomore Album!
One thing that a lot of amazing-first-album bands do is fail to succeed a second album. With a performer like Robert Randolph, who has been huge in the guitar-business over the past couple years, you really can't go wrong with just the simple fact that this album is going to have amazing guitar work. Well, this is prior to knowing that the legend Eric Clapton is on the album helping do a cover of Jesus is Just Alright. It only just jumps the album from a 5-star to a... well... I guess you have to just stay at 5-star, but still. The guitar work is beyond expectation! Robert Randolph truly throws in some impressive string-work all throughout the project. But one thing that boggled me a little more than the first album was the lyrics. Not that the first albums lyrics were bad (because they weren't), but Colorblind's lyrics are absolutely brilliant. You can actually feel the fact that a lot of love was put into this album. The boys really did it again with this masterpiece. Now that they have conquered the "Sophomore Curse", Robert Randolph and the Family Band are going to continue their brilliance for years to come.
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE
This album is truly amazing. I love the collaborations with Eric Clapton and Dave Matthews. I agree with some of the other reviews that this is a little different and more mainstream but that's not a bad thing. I too am a huge fan of some of the long jams, especially on Live From the Wetlands, but this is a nice change of pace that still rocks out! Let's face it Robert Randolph & The Family couldn't make bad music if they tried!
