Album Review

A compilation of Donovan's 1965 acoustic recordings, initially made for Pye Records in the U.K. and issued by Hickory Records in the U.S., re-released by a British discount label.

Customer Reviews

Not what it claims to be, but superb nonetheless!

I’m a huge fan of re-recordings. I’m always interested to hear what a good artist does to an old song after several decades of experience. Turns out, this is NOT an album of re-recordings, as the tag claims. Well, I suppose it is in a manner of speaking. But where I come from, re-recordings with an audience clapping in between the songs is called “a live album.” This is a live album. God knows when it was recorded, since it comes with no info. (If this downloading culture is going to replace CDs, give us some info for cryin’ out loud! Who produced it? Who are the musicians? Where/when was it recorded?) All that aside, it’s a beautiful recording! The set list is excellent, and almost all of it is solo acoustic. Several diverse instruments appear toward the end: flute, clarinet, harmonica and, as I stated before, we have no idea who’s playing them. But the whole concert comes off as perfect Donovan: gentle, heartfelt and positive. If it’s an old recording, then kudos to the engineer for achieving such perfect sound quality! If it’s a recent recording, then kudos to Donovan for having such a beautiful voice at his age!

This album was originally released as a "Donovan Live" recording, from the Opera House in Sydney, Australia. Came out in....the mid 90's (?), or there abouts. It seems to have ben released several times by now....poor form on someone's part ~ most likely not Donovan's. Maybe the recording is being re-sold and then re-released.

Upon his emergence during the mid-'60s, Donovan was anointed "Britain's answer to Bob Dylan," a facile but largely unfounded comparison which compromised the Scottish folk-pop troubadour's own unique vision. Where the thrust of Dylan's music remains its bleak introspection and bitter realism, Donovan fully embraced the wide-eyed optimism of the flower power movement, his ethereal, ornate songs radiating a mystical beauty and childlike wonder; for better or worse, his recordings remain quintessential...
