iTunes Review

Somewhat overshadowed by the legendary saxophonist's contemporaneous ground-breakers Giant Steps (1959) and My Favorite Things (1960), this album, recorded in late 1960, is innovative in its own right. Though every cut has its improvisational glories, the centerpiece here is "Body and Soul", a song every jazz musician takes a crack at sooner or later. At first 'Trane floats above a tasty bed of chords by Tyner before the pianist lurches into a typically melodic solo bordering on delirium. This is followed by a solo by Coltrane which suggests both a compulsion being tamed and an ascent toward ecstasy. Throughout this album, drummer Elvin Jones moves things along with an authoritative subtlety that was uniquely his. Though this isn't quite Coltrane's classic quartet-it has Steve Davis instead of Jimmy Garrison on bass-it's 'Trane settling on a classic sound after all those years of hard-bop freelancing. Withh it, he finds a template that would be his during the historic breakthroughs of the next half dozen years that follow.

My favorite Coltrane

I think this is his best album. It was the most focused, creative period in his career, yet is often overshadowed by "A Love Supreme." "Coltrane's Sound" is complete with all the Giant Steps-era harmonic innovations, yet is accessible and very listenable unlike some of his later material.

great coltrane

this is a great example of coltrane for anybody to hear as a first impression. satellite is one of the most deep and stirring songs i've ever heard. highly reccomended.

Cool

This album is simply cool. I love it, and believe that it should be a part of every jazz enthusiast's collection.

Despite a relatively brief career (he first came to notice as a sideman at age 29 in 1955, formally launched a solo career at 33 in 1960, and was dead at 40 in 1967), saxophonist John Coltrane was among the most important, and most controversial, figures in jazz. It seems amazing that his period of greatest activity was so short, not only because he recorded prolifically, but also because, taking advantage of his fame, the record companies that recorded him as a sideman in the 1950s frequently reissued...
