iTunes Review

With his throaty baritone drawl and a penchant for writing catchy songs deeply inspired by 1970s outlaw country, Jason Boland will inevitably garner many a comparison to the late Waylon Jennings. But he and his band the Stragglers bring more to the table than retro twang on Comal County Blue, their 5th studio album. The pensive "Something You Don't See Everyday" touches on relevant social commentary and takes witty jabs at the U.S. occupation of Iraq with lyrics like, "Poor boys doing rich men's evil business/ They don't realize they're blowing up a hearse." And on the opening cut "Sons And Daughters Of Dixie" Boland lambastes the people in power who didn't do anything in Hurricane Katrina's wake ("Those who turned a blind eye will answer for their sins"), while simultaneously praising the residents of New Orleans and Mississippi for surviving and reshaping their communities ("One thing a southern man knows how to do is to rebuild"). Things get a bit more romantic on the title track with wistful small town sentiment set to a slow burning country ballad drenched in weepy pedal steel notes and acoustic guitars. Boland may not specialize in narratives, but his lyrics do paint vivid imagery.

JB&S come through yet again

As with all their previous material this one will be on heavy rotation for me. I got an advance copy on Cd a few days ago, so I don't have tracks 13 & 14 but I am familiar with the songs from the live shows. I have to say, buy the iTunes version because these are 2 of the strongest tunes on the album. My personal favorites right now are "Comal County Blue", "Bottle By My Bed", "God Is Mad At Me", and "Blowing Through The Hills". That said there is not really a weak link on the whole thing. This album is simply the next chapter in the lives of Jason, Grant, Roger and Noah and it shows throughout. "Something You Don't See Everyday" references a couple of adventures that the band has had on the road since the last album came out and "Bottle By My Bed" feels like part 3 in a trilogy which includes "Backslider Blues" (from Pearl Snaps) and "Mary" (from the Live album and Somewhere In The Middle). To me that is what makes true country music so great, the ability to make distill the experiences of life both good and bad into a song and make people feel what it is you're singing about. This album suceeds in doing that, so I would consider it an excellent album. I can't pick favorite JB&S album, to me they're all chapters in the same book and now I can add this chapter to my collection. Bottom line, it's not radio friendly or made to please anybody but the artists, and that is how a strong uncompromising country album gets made. This truly is "Country Music The Way It Should Be".

Worth the wait!!!

I have been waiting a month for this cd to be release. It was well worth the wait because JB&S have once again created a masterpiece!

Boland is back, kind of

This is the best Stragglers record since Pearl Snaps! The one thing that irritates me on this record is the really bad mixing / overdubbing job on the lead guitar starting on track 4. Just not mixed well at all. Hard to keep the radio cranked and jamming with bad mixing... Jason, Roger, Brad, Grant, & Noah did a hell of a job on this record. Maines did not.
