iTunes Review
Ten years into their recording career, Skillet makes its most ambitious bid for mainstream success with 2006’s Comatose. The veteran Contemporary Christian group has long shown an ability to assimilate diverse elements – including grunge and industrial – into its work, and John Cooper’s aggressive lead vocals and versatile songwriting skills have displayed both sincere faith and a keen pop culture sense. With Comatose, Skillet turns up the audio heat considerably, fashioning a fine-polished modern sound, long on meaty guitar hooks and insistent bass lines, displaying a sonic heft exemplified by “Rebirthing” and “Those Nights." As before, the music is the vehicle for messages of hope and salvation — this time, though, the lyrics draw to a greater degree upon Cooper’s personal struggles. “Looking For Angels” and the title track crystallize the album’s theme of striving against spiritual complacency and doubt. Like Chevelle and Switchfoot before them, Skillet aims to make 21st Century Christian rock that beckons to the uncommitted as well as the believer, and Comatose takes a bracing and convincing step towards that goal.
Customer Reviews
Their best work. Period.
Rebirthing - Awesome blending of classical and rock, reminiscent of Evanescence. One of the strongest tracks on the record. The Last Night - A song of encouragement. "This is the last night you'll spend alone/I'll wrap you in my arms and I won't let go/I'm everything you need me to be". Awesome guitar work.. this one's a keeper. Yours to Hold - Slowing the pace down, this is a song about that special someone you'd do anything to be with, but they just never knew it. You'll find yourself singing this one in the shower. Better than Drugs - Proclaming that God is "better than drugs/Your love is like wine", the guitar work in this song sounds so much like Breaking Benjamin i had to double-check my playlist to make sure it wasn't. a solid track. Comatose - Piano and orchestral work that would make Evanescence green with envy, guitars that would make Three Days Grace jealous, and lyrics that get stuck in your head while saying something meaningful make for arguably the best song here. It's an anthem of our emptiness without a Savior to fill the void. "Comatose/I'll never wake up without an overdose/of You" The Older I Get - A song about the pain of growing apart from someone you love. Quality sound, with lyrics that are guaranteed to stay in your head for a long time to come. Those Nights - "Remember when we'd/Stay up late and we'd talk all night/In a dark room lit by the TV light/Through all the hard times in my life/Those nights kept me alive" An anthem of memories. If not so heavy, it would be made for Radio Disney. Simply a fun song. Falling Inside the Black - Following that is a rather dark song about losing control, slipping away, screaming for someone to save you. Sounds like a song Disturbed would write. Great music. Say Goodbye - The slowest song here, this song gives you a break from the past 45 minutes of crunching guitars. A song of regret, in some ways.. Someone you love is leaving, and just can't bring yourself to say goodbye. "Do you remember, in December/How we swore we'd never change/Even though you're leaving/Our feelings would always stay the same/Do we have to end this now?/Can we make it last somehow?" Whispers in the Dark - A love song from God to man, this song has some of the catchiest hooks on the album. Fans of Breaking Benjamin should definitely take notice. Guaranteed to be running through your head until you scream, it reminds us that God's love is "a burning, consuming fire". Looking for Angels - The lyrics here are mostly spoken, reminiscent of Linkin Park's "Nobody's Listening". Not my favorite track on the record, but it does make some good points. It's a somewhat jarring deviation from the rest of the album. Overall, this may be the best rock album I have ever heard. Variation and quality, both lyrically and musically make for possibly the best $9.90 you'll ever spend. Enjoy the masterpiece. Download: "The Last Night", "Comatose", "Yours to Hold", "Rebirthing".
Comatose!
Rebirthing- superb orchestration, production; sounds like Collide, but in D flat.***** The Last Night- another album strong point**** Yours to Hold- gets an A for lyrics, sounds alright**** Better Than Drugs- monster riff+ great lyrics+ melancholy chorus=brilliance***** Comatose- superb orchestration, memorable chorus***** The Older I Get- good vocals, but not my bag*** Those Nights- Relient K-ish sounding, except for the chorus**** Falling Inside the Black- solid song, kind of like Imperfection**** Say Goodbye- too soft, reminds me Under My Skin*** Whispers In The Dark- my favorite song besides Rebirthing, it rocks harder though***** Looking for Angels- unforgettable, bold lyrics***** In my opinion, Skillet sacrifices the catchy verses of Collide for catchy chorus, which isnt always a bad thing.
