Album Review
Eisley gets more ambitious with each EP and album, as well they should: Combinations is the band's second album, but they recorded it when they were barely in their twenties — a time when growth and change aren't just natural, they're required. This set of songs reflects Eisley's evolution; they sound more grown-up and maybe a shade less playful than Room Noises and the band's EPs, but they keep the uniqueness that made Eisley worth hearing in the first place. Combinations gets off to a literally rocky start with "Many Funerals," which begins with a moody sea shanty-like melody that swells into charging choruses. It's the heaviest, angstiest Eisley song yet, and though it borders on overwrought, it shows the depth and breadth the band brings to their music this time around. The brooding, guitar-heavy feel continues, albeit in very different ways, on "Invasion"'s dark pop and on "A Sight to Behold," which finds the DuPree sisters questioning their sanity to a backdrop of pizzicato strings and distorted beats. The DuPrees' vocals and melodies remain Eisley's greatest, most unique strengths. The harmonies the sisters craft could've appeared on songs from decades ago (and sound especially sweet on the deceptively beguiling "Go Away"), while "I Could Be There for You"'s traditional-sounding tune is even more striking when set to a very contemporary arrangement. The album's eclectic-yet-cohesive feel spans the polished, poppy "Taking Control" and gorgeous "Ten Cent Blues" to the elegant ballad "If You're Wondering" (which boasts chimes, kalimba, and a rainstorm) and the title track, which with its lavish arrangement and fairy tale sweep, almost sounds like a Top 40-friendly version of Joanna Newsom. Eisley's mix of old and new, and accessible and unexpected, makes their music utterly charming, and Combinations is a blend of bewitching contradictions.

To good for words
You know how people say an album is "amazing" or whatever? Well, they usually don't mean it in the true sense of the word. Webster defines amazing as 'to fill with wonder'. Okay, you make think lots of things fill you with wonder. At first an album may seem pretty good and fun so you say it's amazing. Fair enough. But this album doesn't compare to any of that. This album is totally different. I, myself, have been an Eisley fan since very shortly after the release of their debut full length "Room Noises" and have been waiting for this album for a long time. After listening to each song about a dozen times on the full album Myspace stream I was amazed. In the true sense of the word. All the expectations I had had since I heard the DuPree's were going back into the studio were fulfilled. My absolute favorite on the album is "Come Clean," which sounds a bit more like some of the previous work. (Unlike "Many Funerals," the album opener, which is the absolute perfect was to start of this masterpiece.) The first time I heard the first verse of "Taking Control" it sent me through the roof. Sherri's vocals and thhe drum beat give a whole new meaning to the word sweet. I also can't get enough of "Ten Cent Blues". It just makes me feel like I'm in Texas, like I'm down south... and I've never been anywhere remotely close to Texas in my life. The 'breakdown' in the middle of "A Sight To Behold" is unlike anything Eisley has ever done... and it sounds completely incredible. When that song ended for the first time I thought this album couldn't get any better. Then "Combinations," the title track, started to play. And went to the chorus. That was the moment I knew this was a true masterpiece which will never be forgotten. (By the way, just because I skipped some of the songs doesn't mean they are not to be classified as brilliant.) The album closes with a sweet little tune called "If You're Wondering" which features some instrumentation that is so unique and when the song ends the listener is filled with the feeling that this group of people are truley something magnificent and will be remembered for many years to come.
Different, but still the Same
I am a very new Eisley fan, but I am a whole hearted one. I have to say, I'm more a fan of the old Eisley. I loved the dreamy pop ballads off of "Room Noises." they were extremely easy to listen to with their haunting harmonies. They were beautiful songs. Now, with "Combinations," Eisley has turned a corner. The songs are much darker, more minor keys, less happy ooohs and ahhs. Many Funerals and Invasion are excellent. While they are dark, they are crafted wonderfully. "Taking Control" is wierd because the chorus is like a rock/pop song, but the verses don't fit at all. But the choruses are worth the song. "Go Away" is great. THe vocals and piano really help it stand out. "I Could be There for You" is, in my opinion, the weakest link. It's ... wierd. It's not very melodic. "Come Clean" is another of the strongest tracks, as is "Ten Cent Blues". "Sight to Behold" returns to the dark side of the album, echoing a rockier style of "Many Funerals," "Combinations" and "If You're Wondering" wrap up the album well, but a little anticlimacticly. "Wondering" is a beautiful song complete with xylophone and rainstorm. Overall, I think its a good album, but "Room Noises" was a great album. I preferred the fantasy that made Eisley what it was. I also am not a huge fan of the marxophone and ukelele that make appearances. They just don't seem to fit. I appreciate that Eisley is trying new things, but the old formula worked, so why fix it?
great follow-up to Room Noises
just spent a few minutes yesterday listening to this album about 3 times in a row. and its just great stuff. wasnt dissapointed with any of the tracks. its a good solid album.
