iTunes Review
Capitalizing on the stripped- and slimmed-down approach of Only By the Night, Kings of Leon come back with another lean and mean collection of serious rock. The Strokes-to-Stones ambush of their earlier records has mostly been forsaken for a cleaner, radio-friendly sound that wants the world and wants it now. “The End” comes snarling not out of their hometown South, but with the noir and glitter of Los Angeles. “Radioactive” channels the Cure and 1980s college-rock with vocal wails and guitar chimes. “Pyro” skips down the backroads with a rock star’s pose and a dose of homegrown Tom Petty. “Mary” throws the distorted guitars to the wall. “The Face” pulses with the feel that they’ve wandered into Chris Isaak’s bedroom. “Back Down South” is their quick trip to Exile-era Stones. “Beach Side” is the lighter side of Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer.” “No Money” throws the band back into a barroom battle of the bands with their sharpest moves out front. Come Around Sundown shows a band well versed in every decade of rock ‘n’ roll and beholden to none.
Customer Reviews
Seriously...
Come on guys, really? It's the same old crap with every single band that actually gains success.
QUIT LIVING IN THE PAST! We will never have another Aha or Manhood!
People grow up. Musicians are people too.
Look at yourself from 5-10 years ago...are you the same? Of course not. So why would you expect a band to stick to one sound? People mature, get better at their instruments, sing better, feel other things, go through different things..etc.
The music from album to album will never sound the same with any band, so don't immediately say this album is horrible JUST because it doesn't sound like Aha or Because of the times..etc.
If you don't like it, and are still waiting for the old Kings to come back, then please move aside so new and true fans can appreciate this album...and the band as GROWING musicians.
Be happy for their success. They've come a long way.
What ever happened to the rock and roll?
It's amazing how fast the Followill's have forgotten how to rock. I have watched this band go from a dirty, sexy, growling, snarling, rock band to a ballad heavy Euro-pop act in a matter of 2 albums. It's really dissapointing. I really don't care how many stars this album gets, anyone who listened to Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake knows what I'm talking about.
This used to be a band that got you excited to share them with your friends. Now I'll just tell my friends to buy the O.C. soundtrack if they want to hear something similar.
I was really hoping there was a return to form on this album, but it all sounds the same....
Probably the last Kings album I will buy, and I say that with more than a little emotion.
Still Good
Kings were my favorite band but now they have become my guilty pleasure. Still a good album but oh how I miss the old days.
