iTunes Review

Rick James easily carved out a niche for himself with his 1977 solo debut. Come Get It! is tougher than Earth, Wind & Fire, catchier than Funkadelic, and harder-edged than disco. The years James spent cutting his teeth with various rock and blues bands finally paid off, and he guides the album with contagious bravado. James is an expert at working a mood, whether it’s the knifelike grooves of “You and I,” the laid-back stroll of “Mary Jane” (soul music’s most delightful tribute to marijuana), or the rambling narcotic balladry of “Dream Maker” and “Hollywood.” James could play the outrageous ringleader, but more important is his ability to connect with the everyman. Woven throughout Come Get It! are references to poverty and ghetto culture, and over the course of the album it becomes clear that James isn’t content to simply make dance music — he wants to create “street songs.”

Customer Reviews

Howard Dino don't know Sheeet!!

Rick James had a number of hits. Ghetto Life, Bustin Out, Call Me Up, 17, Ebony Eyes, Fire and Desire w/ the great Ms. Teena Maria, and many many others. Some people only know of the pop songs cause they only listen to the radio and are not true fans, and just don't know the deal.

Do you love me May Jane?

Only Rick could sing about weed like it was a woman.

You tell 'em, Smthtlk!!

I agree with Smthtlk. In my opinion, Superfreak was not even one of Rick's better songs. The ones you mentioned are much better, to include You and I off of this album. Another great slow jam was Dream Maker. And of course, no music collection is complete w/o Mary Jane. Thanks for all the great songs, Rick! RIP. I'm Rick James, B*#ch!!!!!!

In the late '70s, when the fortunes of Motown Records seemed to be flagging, Rick James came along and rescued the company, providing funky hits that updated the label's style and saw it through into the mid-'80s. Actually, James had been with Motown earlier, though nothing had come of it.
