Album Review

Ex-Gong Show contestant Cheryl Lynn hit paydirt with her self-titled debut album for Columbia. "Got to Be Real," one of those unavoidable disco-era hits — thanks to its instantly memorable bassline and Lynn's alternately soaring and barely contained giddiness — is one of the few singles of its level of success (number one black singles, number 11 club play, number 12 pop) to decrease in value with over-saturation. Thanks to that song and the multi-tiered "Star Love," Cheryl Lynn reached number five on the black albums chart and provided the artist with her time in the spotlight. It's easily her best full-length, full of solid album cuts that act as support for the key singles rather than attempting to match them or even duplicate them with forced hooks and bungled attempts at making a diverse listen. In fact, "You Saved My Day" is just as great as the hits and could've been bigger with the right support — nevertheless, it was a favorite of DJ Frankie Knuckles while he was at Chicago's infamous Warehouse. A strong debut that benefits from assured ease.

Finally!

this CD has the excellent old-skool rhythm that itunes really needed! this is the kind of stuff that influenced most artists of today! and whoever said that "she is not going anywhere", well yeah, she's 70's she already came.

You Saved My Day

The album while not a solid win across the board, is no fault of Ms. Lynn's she is a serious singer,
what she and other singers of her era are indicators of is that --- the switch is official. Big girls do not get play in commercial arenas any more. You Saved My Day is a Chicago House music classic and off those merits alone Cherly gets props from me.

just wanted to conteract the first comment

i remember wearing this album out back in 1978 and it still sounds good, keep in mind that this was her first album after winning the Gong Show so a few more came after this

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '70s, '80s

Perhaps the lone artist who got her start on The Gong Show and remained credible, Cheryl Lynn's searing, often captivating voice and great range were showcased on some marvelous dance hits in the late '70s and early '80s. She signed with Columbia in 1978, and her debut LP Cheryl Lynn featured the anthem "Got To Be Real," which topped the R&B charts and reached number 12 pop. The follow-up, "Star Love," was a Top 20 R&B hit, and Lynn kept things going with "Shake It Up Tonight" in 1981, another...
