iTunes Review

Named after PJ Harvey’s 2004 album, Uh Huh Her play electro-pop that is far more commercial and breathier than anything in Ms. Harvey’s catalog. The L.A.-based duo consists of Leisha Hailey of Showtime’s The L Word and the Murmurs and Camila Grey, formerly of Mellowdrone. Together, they create pop friction. “Not a Love Song” has all the hallmarks of a modern pop song, but “Explode” uses synthetic textures to create a dream-cloud where a little rain never heard anyone. The dance moves of “Wait Another Day” have their roots in the ‘80s, but with a touch of the ethereal shadings of Goth adding depth and gravitas. The title track is an unashamed pop tune with an ebullient bounce. “Say So” would be a punk anthem with tough guitars. As it stands, it’s lighter on its feet with shimmying keyboards and tight harmonies. Melody is queen throughout. Tunes such as “So Long,” “Everyone,” “Dance With Me” and the piano closer “Dreamer” depend on hooks to get the message across.

Hailey, formerly of the jangly, Indigo Girls-esque duo the Murmurs, decided to make a return to the music biz following a five year break; she was subsequently introduced to Mellowdrone bassist and keyboardist Camila Grey in early 2007 and the pair hit it off....
